You know how you look at your own kids so often, you end up finding these tiny little nuances about them, their expressions, their features, that you just fall in love with?!

You study their little faces and memorize every little part and realize they’re just the most beautiful piece of art you’ve ever laid eyes on!

I’ve always known it’s been my job to capture those things, but lately I’ve just really started pick those things out more to myself in the kids I photograph, especially while I’m editing.

Those deep, big, dark eyes that tell sooo much about how they’re feeling in that moment. The way their big kid teeth make them feel so HUGE now. The point of their chin and their handsome jaw line that gives you a gut punch view into their future teen years. The sheer stunning BEAUTY of their sweet, peaceful resting face. Their adorable nose - like good gravy!

I’ve photographed these two kids since before they were born 😏 and gosh, I have a lump in my throat it’s just so special.

I have been so incredibly touched to get to be the one to document this dear family over the years.

Jared and Holly both served at the church camp I grew up going to and we later connected over the years through our love for creativity and all things artsy fartsy. 🤓 I have been so encouraged by their sincerity, openness, hospitality and their beautiful way of intentionally living.

I first photographed them after their third baby was born while they were still living in their tiny home on the same property in these photos! This year I got to come back to see their house, nearly fully complete, and so many more developments on their beautiful land!

The session is a beautiful reminder to me of the kind of photography I want to be doing most. They hoped to have their house complete before this session, and as life goes, it wasn’t quite done. But that’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be a perfectly planned session in the same month every single year. It doesn’t have to be at a location that feels like a Hallmark card. It doesn’t have to be trendy or fancy. It doesn’t have to be when you’ve “finally arrived” at the most perfect, smooth season of life. It’s literally for documenting LIFE.

The kind of photos I want to capture are when you look at what you have and decide to be content with it, in this exact moment, the exact way it is. Choosing to trust God and see this moment in time as absolutely wonderful, because it is. ♥️

Our girls with our sweet kitty Daisy. 🥹♥️ Here are a bunch of photos we took last month, done by my friend Emily Metcalf ♥️

Shirley (in the yellow) is packed full of s***k. She wants to have a good time. She wants everyone to be laughing. She wants desperately in every scenario to be silly. She loves people BIG even though she’ll be stand off-ish at first, she cries big when they leave. She undoubtedly has a stubborn, strong willed, determined nature about her, just like my grandmother, her namesake. It’s uncanny to see. She is clingy to mommy and is ONE with her emotions… like her mother. 😂 Loud, always and has a raspy voice to prove it. Regularly teaching me how to control my own feelings as we teach her to do the same.

Mabel (in the white/patterned) is our tender, like her daddy, introvert. She is always thinking, figuring something out as her sister happily reaps the benefits of her hard work and study. She LOVES chilling and could snuggle with a blanket and show ALL day if we let her. She cried emotional, heartbreaking tears as I read in their Children’s Bible the story of siblings (Cain and Abel) “fighting”. Her conviction and tenderness was crazy to see in a two year old and brought me to tears. She runs hard from her emotions, she does not like them and doesn’t know what to do with them (very much like her daddy) and we are daily working to pursue her diligently in that.

Motherhood is finally settling into a peaceful, joyful place in my heart and mind. It took me by storm and I am so grateful this last year has shifted all of the things in me. I am SO grateful, SO overwhelmed, SO honored to be their mother and am so thankful we have the daddy we do too. ♥️ Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

I am a HUGE advocate for a photo in front of your home.

I literally don’t care what it looks like, how “imperfect” your flower beds are (or non existent like mine right now), or how many years you will or will not be there. It is one of the most traditional poses and I personally think it will never grow old.

The memory or physical place of a home holds so so much for a kids mind as they grow. Like how smelling a familiar smell can teleport you straight to a moment in time - I believe looking at these photos in front of your home can do the same.

So take that photo if you ever get a chance to. Your phone is enough. I promise you won’t regret it. ♥️

Another lovely Summer session that needs a little spot light! 🥹🥰 We started this shoot outside in the front of their home for “just a few minutes”, but ended up getting locked out and had to call the sheriff to help us get back in!! And the cherry on top was that it was during one of the hottest days of the summer! 😅😩

They were SUCH troopers! The kids and I spelled SOS in sticks while mom and dad calmly figured things out and everything still turned out just wonderfully (as you can tell by these images) 🥹🥰♥️

This sweet family welcomed me into their little wooded paradise and it was nothing short of a dream to get to capture them in this tiny little moment of their life. ♥️ What a privilege. Also, I love our quiet, rural Ohio, so so much.

My friend Emily Emily Metcalf is the color bursting, outfit loving, vision executing extraordinaire! 💁‍♀️💃🏼👏🏻 I never would have thought of putting all these colors together and just look how good it all came together!!!

Proof that a simple setting can go a long long way, especially if you have tons of personality in your outfits! These feel so much like THEM and I love that! 🥰 Part 2 coming soon! 👏🏻

Well, I suppose I better share a few of these Summer sessions before we’re too far into Fall! Ha! In true Laura fashion!...

The challenge of making a simple backyard or cozy home feel like art, never ever gets old!

Part one of this dear fam. 🥹🥹🥹

As I was preparing to post these, I notice myself comparing my work to photographers I admire and I continually come back to feeling like it just doesn’t hit the same as so and so’s or it just doesn’t remind me of anyone else’s work that I like.

It’s enough to bother me and make me think, maybe it’s just not that great then??

But then I hear a friend, family member, or fellow photographer say “that’s such a Laura photo!” And I am so encouraged. Being different is okay.

We are all inspired by different things and I think real art is born out of those individual inspirations. I hope the things that inspire me speak to you through my photos!
