Now let me tell y’all something about Grace.

Y’all are going to be seeing a lot from her one day, because this girl is going to make it.

And I mean that wholeheartedly.

At 17 years old, she is already thinking beyond just one path. Yes, she joined the military, but she’s also already building things outside of it. She’s thinking about business. Branding. Social media. Her future. Her next move.

That is the kind of mindset that changes somebody’s life.

One thing I always tell young people when I meet them is: “This is only the beginning. What are you going to do with what comes next?”

And watching Grace light up while talking about her future was honestly one of the best parts of this entire experience.

She showed me her TikTok. Her Instagram. Everything she’s building and dreaming toward. And for a little while, we just sat there talking about business psychology, life, branding, and future goals.

And honestly? That is my greatest joy.

Not just taking photos.

But getting to witness people at the very beginning of becoming who they are meant to be.

And Grace? She’s just getting started.

When I first got on the phone with Kelsie, I knew this session was going to stay with me.

She told me, “Aida, this is our second coming. This is our whole life. My husband gave up everything we were used to in order to serve our country.”

And after spending time with their family, I understood exactly what she meant.

Steven is preparing to continue his journey toward becoming an officer, and truly, our country needs men like him.

Not simply because he is intelligent or driven — but because he is emotionally aware. The way he spoke about Kelsie carried deep respect. You could feel how much he understood not only the sacrifice of these past 10 weeks, but the sacrifices she has carried throughout all 14 years of their marriage.

That stayed with me.

Because service is rarely carried by one person alone. Behind every strong soldier is often a spouse carrying long nights, constant change, uncertainty, children, home, and the emotional weight of holding everything together.

And Kelsie does it with grace.

Watching them together was beautiful. The quiet way he held her. The laughter after tears. The way their boys looked at them with so much pride and safety in their eyes.

This family was deeply loved by everyone around them, and honestly, it was easy to understand why.

Brooke and I captured over 1,700 images that day, but these are the moments that stayed with me most: the tears, the laughter after, the boys running through the Carolina pines, and the quiet moments in between.

The moments that felt real.

Steven and Kelsie, thank you for allowing me the honor of documenting this chapter of your story. Thank you for your sacrifice, your steadiness, your devotion to one another, and the example you are setting for your boys and those around you.

Families like this remind me what service truly looks like.

Because behind every uniform is a family serving too.

One weekday afternoon in February, Kayla messaged me:
“Aida, I’m leaving my husband and kids for boot camp, and I’m finally going to do what I’ve always dreamed of doing. I want you to capture the madness.”
And honestly, that is exactly what this was. Beautiful, emotional, real-life madness.
She made a group chat with Jason and me so we could coordinate, prepare, and make sure everything flowed smoothly leading up to reunion day. Then the day finally rolled around, and we did exactly what I do every single week as a photographer — show up in the middle of real life and capture the moments people never want to forget.
Only this one carried a little more weight.
These photos are of a mother who left her babies behind to serve her country and build a better future for her family, while Jason, Nana, and their village helped hold everything together back home. We spent two days documenting the chaos, the excitement, the waiting, the laughter, and finally… the reunion.
On April 30th, Kayla’s sacrifice finally came full circle. Mama was home.
The hugs were tighter. The laughter was louder. The babies clung a little longer. You could feel the months apart sitting quietly underneath every smile.
This session reminded me that motherhood is sacrifice in so many forms. Sometimes it looks like packed lunches and bedtime routines. Sometimes it looks like combat boots, long phone calls, countdowns on calendars, and trusting your village to help carry the weight until you can hold your babies again.
None of it is possible without support. Without spouses, grandparents, friends, and the people willing to step in and love your children alongside you while you chase something bigger for your family.
And when the reunion finally comes? It is pure magic. Loud, messy, emotional magic.
So proud of the Thompsons and so excited to see where Army life takes them next. 🇺🇸
And to all the bad ass mamas out there making their realities and dreams happen while still loving their families fiercely along the way — Happy Mother’s Day. 🤍

Some moments aren’t planned weeks in advance. Sometimes they happen because someone cares enough to make it happen. James reached out the day before Family Day to create this for his beloved, and I got to witness it unfold in real time. That’s what I’m here for. Thank you both for trusting me.

Some families just know.
Before the uniform, before the title—there was a quiet certainty.
He was meant for more.
And here it is… the moment it all meets.
