One weekday afternoon in February, Kayla messaged me:
“Aida, I’m leaving my husband and kids for boot camp, and I’m finally going to do what I’ve always dreamed of doing. I want you to capture the madness.”
And honestly, that is exactly what this was. Beautiful, emotional, real-life madness.
She made a group chat with Jason and me so we could coordinate, prepare, and make sure everything flowed smoothly leading up to reunion day. Then the day finally rolled around, and we did exactly what I do every single week as a photographer — show up in the middle of real life and capture the moments people never want to forget.
Only this one carried a little more weight.
These photos are of a mother who left her babies behind to serve her country and build a better future for her family, while Jason, Nana, and their village helped hold everything together back home. We spent two days documenting the chaos, the excitement, the waiting, the laughter, and finally… the reunion.
On April 30th, Kayla’s sacrifice finally came full circle. Mama was home.
The hugs were tighter. The laughter was louder. The babies clung a little longer. You could feel the months apart sitting quietly underneath every smile.
This session reminded me that motherhood is sacrifice in so many forms. Sometimes it looks like packed lunches and bedtime routines. Sometimes it looks like combat boots, long phone calls, countdowns on calendars, and trusting your village to help carry the weight until you can hold your babies again.
None of it is possible without support. Without spouses, grandparents, friends, and the people willing to step in and love your children alongside you while you chase something bigger for your family.
And when the reunion finally comes? It is pure magic. Loud, messy, emotional magic.
So proud of the Thompsons and so excited to see where Army life takes them next. 🇺🇸
And to all the bad ass mamas out there making their realities and dreams happen while still loving their families fiercely along the way — Happy Mother’s Day. 🤍
