The people in this room are stewards of your local and state community history. Archivists, curators, special collection managers from institutions across the Mid Atlantic Region. Their work takes real courage: deciding what gets preserved, what gets displayed, and how original sources are presented, even when the historical record is complicated or uncomfortable. I've loved learning alongside this crowd at .

Get out there and check out a local museum or library archives and thank the archivist while you are there.

This week is Preservation Week but preservation doesn't start in museums. It starts in your basement.

One of the most important things you can do right now is move your family photo collections out of the attic, basement, or garage. Here on the East Coast, we deal with humidity and wide temperature swings year-round—and those spaces are the worst possible environment for for your family photo collection.

The attached photo is what that damage looks like when your photos have been stored in a humid or damp location. Sadly, we've seen a few of these lately. And when one looks like this, you can almost guarantee there will be more just like it.

Step one doesn't require organizing a single thing. Just bring them inside. If you're worried about what might come with them—mold, moisture, pest evidence—transfer your photographs into clean containers, remove any paper or materials showing signs of damage, and store them temporarily in a climate-controlled room. That's it. You've taken the most important step.

We'll talk about what comes next — but for now, just get them inside where they belong.

🧤 Gloves on—always

At Photo Archivers, we wear gloves when we handle photo materials. Why? Because oils and fingerprints can damage your precious images over time.

We like to say: any fingerprints you find on your photos won’t be ours. We take special care to never return your prints with our prints. See what we did there?

Organizing your own collection at home? A quick pair of nitrile or cotton gloves goes a long way. Your photos will thank you!

📷 Photos come in all shapes and sizes—and we’ve seen them all!

From vintage film envelopes to wallet-sized prints and photo lab folders, we love uncovering the unique ways memories were once shared. These envelopes and folders often give us clues to the era the photos were taken.

Take a peek at some of the charming, retro packaging that might be hiding in your collection!

🥹 We know we did our job right when we make you cry.

Not the bad kind of tear—the happy tears. Reconnecting with long-forgotten photos or seeing a lifetime of memories come together can be deeply moving. And it’s why we love what we do.

📸 Why do we use cameras instead of scanners at Photo Archivers?
Because your memories deserve the best.

🖼️ Automated feeders can scratch or damage aging photos. Our camera scanning process is gentle, precise, and fully manual—giving us maximum control over image quality.

We use the Nikon D850, a 47.5MP powerhouse that produces ultra-high-resolution images. Whether you want an exact duplicate or a fully restored masterpiece, we’ve got you covered—and yes, you can reprint at sizes bigger than the original.

Every project starts with a conversation. We take time to understand your goals—whether you're preserving family history, downsizing, or preparing a legacy gift. You're not just dropping off photos—you’re starting a journey with a team that truly listens.

Last week, I spent 3½ days with two incredible people who run businesses similar to mine. From 8 AM to 11 PM, we shop talked nonstop—so much so that my husband joked he didn’t know how we had that much to say! 😄

When was the last time you collaborated with someone others might call a “competitor”? If you’re an entrepreneur and haven’t tried it, you’re missing out. These connections have pushed me to grow, stretch my thinking, and reimagine what’s possible.

For the past three years, we’ve held an annual meetup, rotating between our shops and studios. I always leave tired—but inspired. This year, I’m more motivated than ever to improve our client experience and grow Photo Archivers. We've already started planning for our next meetup. Even Reggie thinks it's a good idea!

Huge thanks to Laura of and Adam of . Here's to continued collaboration and even more progress!
