Yes, the workshop is called "Organize Your Photos with Photo Archivers."

It is not a catchy name. It does not have a fun acronym. It definitely will not win any branding awards.

What it WILL do is get that dusty box of photos out of your closet and into some kind of order before you leave.

On June 20th, I'm running a small-group session at the shop—max 6 people—where we dig into your actual collection together. You'll leave with everything assessed, a preliminary sort, and a clear plan for what comes next. Then you pick 3 follow-up
Work Sessions to keep the momentum going.

The people in this room are stewards of your local and state community history. Archivists, curators, special collection managers from institutions across the Mid Atlantic Region. Their work takes real courage: deciding what gets preserved, what gets displayed, and how original sources are presented, even when the historical record is complicated or uncomfortable. I've loved learning alongside this crowd at .

Get out there and check out a local museum or library archives and thank the archivist while you are there.

This week is Preservation Week but preservation doesn't start in museums. It starts in your basement.

One of the most important things you can do right now is move your family photo collections out of the attic, basement, or garage. Here on the East Coast, we deal with humidity and wide temperature swings year-round—and those spaces are the worst possible environment for for your family photo collection.

The attached photo is what that damage looks like when your photos have been stored in a humid or damp location. Sadly, we've seen a few of these lately. And when one looks like this, you can almost guarantee there will be more just like it.

Step one doesn't require organizing a single thing. Just bring them inside. If you're worried about what might come with them—mold, moisture, pest evidence—transfer your photographs into clean containers, remove any paper or materials showing signs of damage, and store them temporarily in a climate-controlled room. That's it. You've taken the most important step.

We'll talk about what comes next — but for now, just get them inside where they belong.

At Photo Archivers, we wear gloves when we handle photo materials. Why? Because oils and fingerprints can damage your precious images over time.

We like to say: any fingerprints you find on your photos won’t be ours. We take special care to never return your prints with our prints. See what we did there?

Organizing your own collection at home? A quick pair of nitrile or cotton gloves goes a long way. Your photos will thank you!
