A husband. A son. A daughter. A best friend who didn’t come home.

Rows and rows of boots lined up in honor of the men and women who gave their lives serving our country. Every pair representing someone deeply loved, dearly missed, and never forgotten.

Someone misses the person who wore those boots.

Today is my birthday 🎉 I’m feeling grateful for everything life has brought my way, the good moments, the challenges, and of course all of the amazing people that I have had the honor of photographing. Today is one of those days of the year that sucks. I used to be so excited for this time of year, but now it’s a reminder that you aren’t here. I miss celebrating our birthdays together. It would be different if she were still alive. I wouldn’t be in Illinois because of the military, but we would still find a way to celebrate. I guess taking these photos every year has been my way of honoring and celebrating her. It also has been a way to talk to Cora about her Great Grandma Hellberg. I really wish they could’ve met. One thing that makes today a little easier is knowing that Grandpa is helping you celebrate. I miss you every day.

April is the Month of the Military Child: a time set aside to recognize the strength, resilience, and sacrifices made by children of service members. They are rooted in strength, blooming wherever they are planted. These kids navigate deployments, long trainings, missed holidays, and time away from a parent far too often — all while continuing to grow, adapt, and love fiercely. They may not wear the uniform, but they serve in their own way every single day.
