Thanks to all y'all who came out to Jam irl on Friday. Made my heart all warm and squishy. Special thanks to who made the trek all the way across the country and who swept in and out of town for the event. We love our Jammers , , , , mom&dad❤️, and all of you who shared in the Jam. Try This: Choose something ordinary. Make at least five photographs of it without moving the subject. Get very close. Move far away. Stand on your head. Photograph it from above. Get down low. Shoot through or around something. Let part of it disappear from the frame.

Which one feels most like what younoticed about the subject? Which one surprises you? Is the photograph you like best the one you would normally have made? The point isn’t five good photographs. The point is discovering that there were five photographs there to begin with.

This month, we’re exploring Point of View —where you place yourself, what you include, what you leave out, and how you want someone else to experience the scene.

The more you experiment with perspective, the more you begin to notice what draws your attention and what makes your photographs feel like you. You stop recording what’s in front of you and start showing us how you see it.

No one sees the way you do.

“I would never choose a subject for what it means to me. I choose a subject and then what I feel about it, what it means, begins to unfold.”

Diane Arbus had a way of making people feel unmistakably themselves. She often photographed her subjects directly, letting posture, clothing, expression, surroundings, and small details tell the story.

Her compositions can feel simple, but there’s a lot happening inside them. Arbus wasn’t just showing us what someone looked like. She was giving us clues, then leaving room for us to wonder.

This week, try letting the meaning come after the photograph. Choose what catches your attention, make the picture, and see what begins to unfold.

That’s part of the fun of Photo Jam. 📸
