Try this:

Try photographing the in-between moments. Instead of photographing the birthday candles being blown out, look at the face waiting for the song to end—or the messy table afterward. At the playground, photograph the climb to the top instead of the trip down the slide.

Watch for before, after, waiting, arriving, leaving and pausing.

Spend some time observing. When everyone else would think the moment is over—or hasn’t started yet—that might be your photograph.

“What drew me to photography was the mystery of it, the fact that it would reveal moments that happened in front of me, that I connected to.” — Alex Prager

There’s a fascinating tension in Alex Prager’s photography: her scenes are carefully constructed, yet they still hold the mystery of a moment caught in time.

Every detail is intentional, from wardrobe and lighting to expression and her bold use of color. Color becomes part of the story, shaping the mood and our emotional response before we even know what’s happening.

As you explore her work, notice what the colors make you feel. What would change if the palette changed? Would it still tell the same story?

Try this: Think of a memory that is tied to a particular color. Maybe it's your grandmother's yellow kitchen, a blue summer lake, or the orange glow of a campfire. Make a photograph that captures the feeling of that memory. It doesn't have to recreate the event—it only needs to evoke it.
