Listen to the sounds of bees and birds. Incredible how much life thrives in a field of milkweed.

Field of Dreams: "If you build it, he will come" or in this case, if you plant it, they will come. I was absolutely stunned to come across this endless field of common milkweed in full bloom, their sweet fragrance filling the air. This native plant is not only vital to countless pollinators like bees, but it's also the host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Seeing this much milkweed in one place made me so happy; because I know the pollinators will come.

Small in stature but impossible to ignore, a male dickcissel pours everything he has into his morning song with remarkable energy. Its distinctive call is one of the defining sounds of a Missouri summer and stands as a living symbol of the rapidly disappearing tallgrass prairie.

His tiny face and those oversized ears remind me of Mickey Mouse! This little baby opossum was spotted trekking along a road near the wetlands after a rain shower, on a very important mission — finding his next meal. And opossums take that job seriously! They chow down on ticks, beetles, slugs, and all kinds of insects, making them one of nature's most underrated pest controllers.

Doesn't this indigo bunting perched on a thistle look just like a musical note? 🎵 Over the years, I've learned to be patient and pay close attention to my surroundings. I framed this shot very carefully in-camera, so I wouldn't have to rely on cropping in post-processing — and then the bird flew in even closer, giving me the opportunity to capture a vertical shot.

This great blue heron came out of nowhere and dove straight into the water to sn**ch a fish, more like an eagle than a typical heron silently wading in the shallows. Nature always finds ways to surprise us! #

Stepping outside this morning, two sounds immediately caught my attention: the soft, warbling melody of an Eastern Bluebird and the deafening, boisterous chatter of a House Wren. Quite a contrast on an otherwise peaceful Friday!

After many hours of waiting inside my camouflage-netted car blind, I couldn't be happier with this image: a male American kestrel delivering a grasshopper to his chicks. Kestrels are devoted parents, making multiple food runs throughout the day to keep their nestlings fed. He made several passes in a matter of split seconds before I finally got the shot, and I love how he turns his head slightly as he flies by, his quiet way of letting me know he was fully aware of my presence. These birds are anything but easy to photograph: small, agile, and utterly unpredictable in flight. Burst mode and pre-capture helped, but keeping him in frame was a challenge every single time.
