Mt Blue Sky is one of my favorite places...ordinarily I'm not super fond of roads up mountains, but the road up this 14,256 foot peak does enable me to get above the tree line on days I ordinarily would not want to be hiking up. Like yesterday, when it was 26 degrees at the summit and fog and snow showers were swirling around the peak. The last mile of the windy steep road up had a thin coat of fresh snow and ice, which made the drive up more interesting. I was the first and only one up top, until a ranger made a quick drive through and presumably determined the road was safe enough to drive on. I had a couple minutes of sunlight at sunrise at the top, then fog moved in and for the next half hour there was nothing but fog, so I slowly started heading down, and this was the view about a mile below the summit as the fog started to clear!

After an insanely warm and dry winter, it's not surprising that we are having a spring with some cold wet spells. The advantage of these late season snows has meant that I could pursue one of my favorite subjects--reflections--along with the snowy scenes. So when I saw that Rocky Mountain National Park was getting a foot of snow with this week's storm, it was a no-brainer that I had to make it up there! I left at 2am Wednesday morning and drove through a whiteout over Monument Hill (a high point on I-25) to get to the park in time for a sunrise hike. When I got to the huge Bear Lake trailhead parking at 5am, there was only one other car in the lot, and I made the first tracks in the fresh snow on the way up to Dream Lake. It was still snowing when I started the hike, and unfortunately it was still pretty foggy at sunrise (will post those pics next) but I knew it would partially clear as soon as the sun got a little higher, so I hiked back down to Bear Lake in time for the best light of the morning. This was the scene from the lakeshore at Bear!

I hiked up Sugarloaf Mountain, a small 9K foot peak west of Boulder, yesterday cause I figured the spotty showers would break up arounds sunset and result in some interesting light over the Continental Divide. I was not wrong...

I love snow--but I especially love the first and last(?) snow of the season! They are dynamic and represent both change and opposition. The first snow is like a wake--mourning a death but celebrating their legacy. The last is like a christening--celebrating new life but facing and planning for the challenges ahead.
So, for yesterday's snow, I wanted to go somewhere that accentuated those themes, and after spending some time on Google Earth and researching a couple candidates, i quickly settled on a short trip to Palmer Lake, just north of Colorado Springs. I had never been to the lakes before, but I figured the combination of fresh snow clinging to the trees and open water would be special.
I was the only car in the big trailhead parking lot (that apparently gets pretty busy in summer) but I joined a local couple doing a daily hike up to the lakes on the way up, and they filled me in on some of the sights and side trails. The first lake (reservoir) was pretty unexciting, but the second upper lake was jaw-dropping beautiful! Here's the highlights of yesterday's hike and shoot.

I knew Pikes Peak would look pretty with the full moon last week, with all that fresh snow; but it was even more jaw-dropping than I expected! This was an hour or so after sunset.

Tonight's storm, from my driveway. One 10 second exposure; it was probably several lightning strikes, but this is still a pretty impressive grouping for 10 seconds!
