Lake San Cristobal sits just outside Lake City, Colorado at an elevation of 9,003 feet. It's a freshwater lake, up to 89 feet deep in places, and was formed about 700 years ago when the first Slumgullion Earthflow, a natural landslide, created a dam across the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. I kayaked on this lake for the first time during this trip and was amazed at the clear turquoise color of the water. This night, we drove to the Lake San Cristobal Overlook on Hwy. 149 and walked down the trail until we had a clear view of both the Milky Way and the water. The string lights are from a foot bridge from the water's edge over to a small island.

While camping this month in the San Juan Mountains, we visited Creede and stopped to see the famous 100+ foot tall North Clear Creek Falls outside of town. This waterfall is a tributary of the Rio Grande River and flows over a deck of solidified ash from a volcano in the San Juan volcanic field that erupted about 27 million years ago.

Scenes this week from Camp Bird Road, which takes you into Yankee Boy Basin outside Ouray, Colorado. The elevation is 12,527 feet and the basin is famous for its wildflowers in mid July. I was a bit too late for the flowers, but the scenery never disappoints, especially Twin Falls.

Photos from our drive up Gold Camp Road to Cripple Creek. For those who are not local, this road follows the old railroad bed from Colorado Springs to the Cripple Creek Mining District, and included 9 tunnels, most of which have caved in. The road was reworked around those sections so it could be a scenic drive. This route was how the gold mines delivered much of the ore to the mills in Colorado Springs for processing, ending for the most part at the roundabout and depot at the corner of Highway 24 and 21st street, which now houses my doctor's office 😁

The Cripple Creek Donkeys are descendants from the donkeys used in the 1800s during the mining days. In summer, they roam the town freely, mingling and taking selfies with tourists. In winter they are corralled in a large field and there's a platform with a chest that contains paper bags with healthy treats to feed them. As soon as I stepped onto the platform, all 11 of them moseyed over to be fed.
