After Sunset at Hidden Lake - Last year Kay and I finally made it to Glacier National Park. We tried to plan a trip there a couple of times before but were always thwarted by one thing or another (fire, pandemic, vacation days). But this time we made it and were glad we persevered.
One of the iconic hikes in GNP is the hike to Hidden Lake. We planned our hike to arrive at the overlook just before sunset. As we were walking toward the lake we encountered a swarm of people heading back. This isn't unusual, most visitors wouldn't want to stay on the trails after dark. But we wanted to see the lake at its best.
Everywhere you go in GNP are warnings about bears. They have ALOT of bears there. Not just little black bears either, they have big grizzlies there too. On our way to the lake, we spotted a momma griz and two large cubs walking toward the trail. We decided to stop and let her move on. They got way too close to some other hikers ahead of us. We were on edge because two days before there was a bear attack on a trail not far from this one. It took a while, but she finally disappeared into the woods. Now, we had to hurry to make it by sunset.
We just made it to the overlook as the sun set. I had just enough time to set up my tripod and take a pano of a pleasant sunset. By now we were the only people at the lower overlook and there was one couple about 100 yards away at the upper platform.
Kay had been on bear watch the whole time and just after the sun disappeared, she declared it was time to pack up and get going. I should have known better, I've watched color appear well after sunset many times, but I wasn't relishing the idea of hiking back in the dark in the heart of bear country either. Just as I put the camera away, closed my tripod and started to walk back, the guy at the higher overlook yelled "turn around!" Sure enough, the sky was ablaze with color and some very cool clouds.
I must have looked ridiculous frantically redeploying my tripod, unpacking my camera and trying to set up the shot before the color disappeared. I heard they guy who shouted laughing. Luckily, the color only got better, and we were treated to this beauty of an "after sunset" at this iconic location.
We hiked back with the couple who was on the upper overlook. We were bear vigilant the whole time. I think they were happy to have the company too. Total darkness hit just a little bit before we reached the parking lot.
I finally got a chance to look at the images today. I'm pleased with the way they turned out. See less
