I just love Porcupines.
The second largest member of the Rodent family (next to Beavers), Porcupines have the sweetest faces and look like chill, fluffy tribbles walking around, clocking in at a staggering 2 mph. They're generally pretty docile creatures, content to spend their time climbing Trees to get those tender Spring green leaves, foraging in the underbrush for bark, shoots, flowers, and the occasional animal bone or hiking boot to get their necessary calcium and sodium.
Though they sound like chaos Hobbits, they're not pushovers. Underneath those long guard hairs is a layer of soft, thick fur. And beneath that lies the bane of many an inexperienced or cocky critter who fu**ed around and found out.
A single Porcupine is armed with about 30,000 quills! At the tip of each quill is a sharp, barbed end that goes into their would-be attacker's skin easily, but doesn't come out the same way. Each one embeds a memorable lesson along with that 1-4" long barb - you underestimated me.
Porcupines offer great lessons in boundaries and protection. You don't have to be the biggest, fastest, or most aggressive one out there to be effective. You can be gentle in life - with yourself and others - spend time with the Trees and walk your own path in life. You can even gnaw on the odd bone or salt lick like the chaos gremlin you are. But when gentleness in communicating your boundaries doesn't get through or when someone comes for you or those you love, you're not afraid to teach them a painful lesson.
I've found the lessons of Porcupine particularly useful a lot lately, so I wanted to share them. I know I'm far from the only one feeling a little (or a lot) prickly right now.
