October was filled with good coffee, good people, and Gilmore Girls back on in the background.

I made some new milspouse friends and caught up with some old ones, hosted our first virtual retreat session inside PCS, and celebrated my son's 10th birthday.

But best of all, my best friend's husband planned an epic birthday surprise for her and I got to be the one to tell her... they're flying out here to see us in a couple weeks!! 🙌🏻😭🎉

I already know that's going to be the highlight of November. 🥹

Garden of the Gods is one of the most requested spots for family photos in Colorado Springs, which means it’s also one of the busiest.

If you want a session there without strangers wandering into every shot, let’s chat because I have a plan. 👇🏻

(1) We’re avoiding weekends. I know you might have more flexibility on a Saturday or Sunday, but there are far fewer people there on weeknights.

(2) We’re starting in front of the rock formations, not in them. This area is quieter and gives us a chance to get wide shots with the formations in the background. We’ll get all of your must-have shots there before venturing into the crowds.

(3) We’re staying flexible on a second location. High Point Overlook is an incredible spot, but it’s on the far end of the one-way loop and has a small parking lot. If the other lots we pass along the way are mostly full, there’s a good chance High Point will be totally packed. In that case, we’ll take whatever parking we can find and make magic wherever we land.

A little planning goes a long way. In this entire gallery, I only had to edit people out of the background of one photo. Not bad for peak photo season! 🍂

Instagram is filled with highlights, but real life is a bit more complicated than that. So, here’s an honest peek at my world right now. I’d love to say it’s all sunshine and rainbows (or Garden of the Gods at sunset!), but that’s just not the truth.

6.5 years of long distance dating + 12 years of active duty life has taught me a few things, whether I wanted the lessons or not.

Caytlen and Jack are in the thick of it right now. Brief visits, a lot of letters, and a whole engagement that started with a proposal before Basic Training. Watching them together during their session reminded me of that season of my own life, so here are a few things that helped us through it.

The last one is my favorite. During pilot training, I used to send Matt “seasonal indicators” for his apartment, because "decorations" were obviously too girly. 💁🏻‍♀️

The PCS membership is coming! 🎉

Photographers Changing Stations started as a way to help each other move, but at our retreat, I heard that you want that support and community in the years in between too.

So, Matt and I are building a membership for every season of military life to help you build a business that’s always ready to move.

There will be free and paid resources, and since no existing platform seems to do everything we need, we’re building the whole thing from scratch. 🫣

It’s going to be messy, but we’re doing it anyway!

September felt like a highlight reel I didn't even have to fake for the 'gram... except for discovering mold in our house, but we'll leave that for another day.

Somewhere between shooting USAFA minis, getting a surprise Graeter’s delivery, cheering on the Falcons, hosting an incredible group of milspouse photographers at our first-ever retreat, and hugging a friend I hadn't seen since our first assignment, I was reminded how good this season of life is. Even in the middle of mold remediation and the gigantic bill that comes with that. 🫣

The Photographers Changing Stations community is even better in person. 🤍

I already knew these women were kind, supportive, and encouraging, but getting to spend a weekend with them confirmed something else too: they are SMART. There were so many mind-blown moments during our sessions and our group chat has been buzzing all week with people already putting what they learned into action.

To everyone who flew to Colorado to be here for our first retreat, thank you. The weekend was everything I hoped it would be and more. 🥹

Round 2 is happening next year. If you’re a milspouse photographer and we sound like your people, keep an eye out. I can’t wait to see who else will join us! 🎉
