This retirement needs a little backstory.

I met the Martins eleven years ago when our families were stationed together in Montana. I volunteered to photograph holiday photos for our squadron back then, long before ETP existed and long before I knew what I was doing behind a camera. You'll have to check out the blog to see what I mean. 😉

But Amanda has been following along ever since, cheering me on from Belgium, Japan, and everywhere in between. So when TJ’s retirement brought them back to Colorado Springs, I was thrilled to be asked to capture their day.

Twenty-eight years of Air Force service, a room full of people who love them, and the most beautiful ceremony venue I've ever shot in. It was such a wonderful day and you can see a glimpse of it on the blog today!

What. A. Month.

A week with extended family at the beach. A weekend with more extended family in Chicago. A week with grandparents in town. A full Saturday hosting four basic cadets from USAFA. Two military retirements, a family session, and my debut in architectural photography.

Grateful for all the fun, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for a slower August! 🫣

Every mom comes to a session hoping for that perfect smiling shot. And we'll get it, I promise.

But I think details like these are just as important. The tiny hand wrapped around your arm. The little head resting on your shoulder. The interactions that change faster than you can keep up with.

You'll hang the smiling shot. But these are the ones you'll come back to when they’re grown. 🤍

Okay, "wizard" might be my new favorite thing anyone has ever called me! 🤍

Here's my honest approach to photographing little ones: I'm rarely going to ask them to stand still and I'm definitely not going to ask them to say cheese.

Instead, I'm going to get on their level, be a little silly, and let them completely forget there's a camera involved. The best toddler photos almost always happen when they're just doing their thing.

Colorado Springs families - if you have a wild one who you're convinced will never sit still for photos, I promise that's not a problem. Actually, playing with them is one of the best parts of my job.
