Sunography Sunshine Urbaniak: Macro Flower Photography “I look at my photographs as pieces of abstract art captured in nature at a precise moment in time. But why flowers?

My intent is to capture the flower’s curves, color, and texture while honoring its presence.”

Sunshine Urbaniak first found herself behind a camera lens in her early 20’s. As a creative person since a young age, she enjoyed exploring different art mediums and styles growing up. Ultimately abstract art stole her heart. To this day she still enjoys painting abstract, but after the birth of her two

children, there was little time to paint. And so Sunography was born. The ability to carry a camera and kids allowed her creativity to run free again. As an abstract painter, Sunshine was always drawn to flowers for their amazing color, texture, and energy. A flower has to attract insects to itself for pollination, as it can’t move, so it must produce vibrant colors and smells. The amount of energy it takes to do all this is pretty amazing and because of this, we too are attracted to flowers. Since her 20’s, she’s been trying to capture what she feels when she looks at flowers and since 2006, through macro flower photography, is able to share her vision. It was macro photography that allowed her viewers to become one with petals and leaves, to feel enveloped by its form, and mostly to prove that art can be seen in everything around us—you just have to look closely. She believes that it’s the moving energy within a plant, the electromagnetic force, that truly shines in her photographs. You can almost feel the vibration. This macro, one-second still captures that life force then transforms into abstract art before your eyes. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what you are looking at. Is it a painting? Is it a photograph? And what is it? That is what she is striving for. It’s about perceiving something that it’s not and using imagination to mold it into something beautiful. In 2011, seven of her flower photographs were chosen to be a part of The Bellagio Hotel and Casino’s $70 million guest room remodel. She uses a Nikon D7200 digital SLR with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 lens.
