Going to start sharing small tips I give my clients when booking, whether you book with me or someone else. These are simple things that can truly elevate your photos. ✨
*** Wardrobe is honestly one of the MOST important parts of your session. Your photographer can pose, guide, and edit beautifully, but what you wear completely changes the overall feel of your images.
First tip? Start with Mom first. Always.
She’s usually the hardest to style, and once her outfit is picked, everything else falls into place. Then style the kids. Dad is easy after that.
Kids have endless options, so you’ll always find pieces that coordinate once the main outfit is chosen.
Second… avoid “matchy matchy” like the old JCPenney days. Coordinating does NOT mean everyone wearing the exact same thing. You want everyone to feel comfortable and still look like themselves. The best photos happen when people feel good in what they’re wearing.
Instead of all solids, mix textures and patterns: Crochet, denim, linen, plaid, gingham, layered fabrics, fun accessories, overalls, boots, hats, wristlets, bows, braids… all of those little details bring so much life and movement into photos.
And this part is just based on MY editing style and photographers with similar earthy/warm edits: I personally avoid pastels and stark white because they tend to pull heavy blue tones and brightness in camera.
*Instead of stark white, try cream. Instead of pastel blue, lean emerald, denim, or olive. Instead of pastel pink, look at burgundy, rust, mauve, or other earthy tones.
Your wardrobe is one of the very first things your eye notices in an image. The colors and textures help tell the story just as much as the location does.
Lastly… wear something you can MOVE in.
Khakis and a stiff button down may photograph nicely standing still, but can you comfortably ring around the rosie in it…..? (Bc I will ask you to.) 😜Probably not. Flow, movement, and comfort matter way more than perfection.
Have fun with it. The more personality your outfits have, the more your photos will feel like YOU.
