When I'm out paddling it is such a routine I do all my prep automatically. Batteries get charged, gear gets thrown in the dry bag...I hate the sun in my eyes and the wind blowing my hair in my face. Problem solved! Plus, I can drag my hat through the water and then dump it over my head. Skygoat christened.

A young double crested cormorant drying off after a fishing trip. It watched me nervously the way all the birds watch me, but I stopped moving and it settled. With luck, I drifted a bit closer and got a good look.

This particular perch is a good distance from the shore and just randomly jutting straight out of the water. A great spot to dry off the wings after a dive.

Take a look at this shore and you will see why I find wood ducks, hooded mergansers, grebes, cormorants, herons, ospreys, eagles, and of course deer and smaller song birds. You could do worse than this little Northern Idaho lake which at times I literally have entirely to myself other than the critters.
