A couple of weeks ago, I took a trip to Jackson Hole through Yellowstone. At the South Entrance to Yellowstone, I stopped and took some photos of Moose Falls. There is a nice trail from the highway to the base of the falls. It is a short but somewhat steep walk in places. Definitely worth the stop.

The northern lights showed up last night as predicted. I went out to a local lake to get some color reflection off the water. The wind was blowing making the water surface quite choppy and wavy. The long exposure smooths that out giving an interesting texture to the water. There was a thin cloud layer at the horizon giving some added shadowing at the horizon. Every aurora shoot is different.

I went for something a little different while photographing the Harlequin Ducks in Yellowstone two weeks ago. Long Exposure photography is very challenging with these ducks as they are constantly preening. Any movement on the ducks part blurs the photo. Then you add another duck and you double the issue. I think the results were well worth the effort.

I was very fortunate to have my first Great Gray Owl experience the other day. Peggy and I just happened to spot this one while driving down the road. Shortly after getting these two shots, it flew away from me and around a corner back into the trees. Given the large amount of bear activity in the area, I did not wander back in to the trees.

Word is coming out about a mauling in Yellowstone National Park yesterday. Sometimes the photos I post make these bears out to be cute and cuddly. They are far from it. There is a good chance the two young men who were mauled were doing nothing wrong and everything right. Many times, that is the case. If your out recreating in grizzly country, you have to understand there is always a risk of an encounter. Most of the time, the encounter turns out okay. Sometimes it does not. I am making this post because I very frequently (no exaggeration here) see people doing things that significantly increases the risk of a bad outcome wile viewing bears. I cannot tell you how many times I have packed up my gear and left an area because it was getting out of control. The day will probably come when something bad will happen in a bear jam. This is because people are being really stupid and careless. I assure you the bear will suffer just as much if not more than the careless viewer. As I mentioned, these comments are not directed in any way towards the unfortunately injured hikers. It is just that here we are at the beginning of the summer visitation to Yellowstone National Park and we have had a bad encounter. I felt it might be a good time to post something to give people something to think about before and while visiting.

Speak quietly while viewing. Stay along the edge of the roadway. Never walk out into the bear's habitat. Never run. Never crowd the bears, always make sure they have room to move and do not block the direction they are going. Never corner a bear, Follow park regulations on keeping distances from wildlife. Always listen to the Park rangers or bear management personnel. Never Ever feed a bear or allow it to have human food. If you feel uncomfortable or see someone being stupid, leave. Use common sense and enjoy the experience.

I do have another page Yellowstone Wildlife Photography, that is viewed by people interested in Yellowstone. I hope they get the message before visiting.

Peggy O'Leary and I made it into Yellowstone early last Friday, the opening day of the East Gate into the Park. We made our way over to the west side in an attempt to find a sow with two cubs that are three years old now. It is not unheard of for a sow to keep her cubs so long at her side but in most cases they would have been weaned last year. I am sure they will be going their separate ways shortly so we wanted to find them before they split. We found them and spent over an hour photographing them. The light was quite harsh with hardly a cloud in the sky and the bears were going in and out of the shadows. Opening day was good to us with sighting ten bears, the Harlequin Ducks, and a moose on the way home. More photos to come.

It was a short and mild winter in this part of Wyoming. The bears got in their hibernation time however, many bears went to their dens late and/or came out early. I caught this one on a stump earlier this week getting in a mid-day nap. Looking forward to seeing what Yellowstone brings tomorrow after the East Gate opens. Enjoy.

Happy Easter to all my friends. Its a little late in the day for this post. I have been traveling all day and just got home to make this post wishing you all a blessed Easter. This is a photo I took several months ago of the full moon setting over an illuminated cross north of Cody, Wyoming. Open to full view to really appreciate the scene.

Cloud cover minimized the aurora viewing opportunity last night. I stuck with it for several hours before calling it a night. However, it really never got much better than this. Around 11pm, I did see some green light columns for less than five minutes. I was in an area of lots of power lines and some yard lights so I did not set up my camera and take photos. I drove to a different location and by the time I got there, they were gone. This will have to do.
