Can you relate? Back in the Day... vs. Today (2026)

My fellow Baby Boomers, this post is for us.

Sometimes we catch ourselves saying, "Back in my day..." And you know what? We have every right to cherish those memories because they helped shape the people we became.

But we also have to remember that the world our children and grandchildren live in today is very different from the one we grew up in.

When many of us were starting out:✅ A loaf of bread cost about 14¢.✅ Apartment rent could be around $49 a month.✅ A brand-new car could cost $1,500 to $2,000.

Today in 2026:• A loaf of bread is around $1.84 or more.• Average apartment rent is about $1,600 a month in many communities.• A new car can easily start around $49,000.

Those aren't just numbers—they tell the story of how much life has changed.

Many of us could find good-paying factory jobs. A paycheck often stretched far enough to support a family. While life certainly wasn't perfect, the financial challenges facing many young adults today are on a completely different level.

Our children and grandchildren aren't growing up in the same world we did.

As Baby Boomers (1946–1964), we've watched the world change through Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and now Generation Beta. Every generation has faced different opportunities and different struggles.

It's easy to compare today's world with "back in the day," but that's like comparing an Android phone to an iPhone. They may look similar, but they work very differently.

The greatest gift we can give the next generation isn't telling them how we did things. It's sharing the values that helped us succeed—hard work, respect, kindness, honesty, faith, perseverance, and compassion—while understanding that they must apply those values in a very different world.

If a young person chooses to follow in our footsteps, we should feel honored. But let's also remember that they may have to walk a different path to reach their goals.

Instead of asking, "Why don't they do it like we did?" maybe we should ask, "How can I help them succeed in today's world?"

Our memories are priceless. Our wisdom is valuable. And our understanding may be one of the greatest gifts we can leave for the generations that follow.

❤️ I'd love to hear from my fellow Baby Boomers.

What is one lesson from "back in the day" that you believe still matters just as much today?
