What a beautiful evening at the Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association’s After Hours & Catch Up event at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, MD! Perfect fall weather, a relaxing atmosphere and great conversations made for a wonderful evening of networking and connecting with others in the green industry.

Even more special was celebrating my new CPH credential!

My love for horticulture began in my teens. Over the past few years, I intentionally slowed down other areas of my life to deepen my knowledge and study the science behind what I love.

Plants saved my life, and in return, I’ve made a lifelong commitment to learning about them, caring for them and doing everything in my power to document, preserve and protect them!

What began as a love for plants became a source of healing when I needed it most. Now, every new milestone in horticulture is another opportunity to give back to what has given me so much. 💚

A Great Spangled Fritillary…resting in my patch of common violets…the very plant its caterpillars depend on.

That reminded me of something.

Life responds to what we cultivate…

Maybe that’s true of more than butterflies.

A patch of clover may not look like much to us, but to a bee it’s a valuable food source. 🐝🍀

If your lawn has clover in bloom, consider mowing early in the morning or later in the evening when pollinators are less active. Bees often visit clover throughout the day…and mowing during peak foraging hours can disturb, injure or even kill them while they’re gathering nectar and pollen.

Sometimes helping wildlife can be as simple as knowing when to mow!

Found this little guy hanging out in the middle of an active work zone like OSHA recommendations are merely suggestions.

Pretty sure he’s a juvenile Green Treefrog. After a brief intervention, I relocated him to a safer location where he can continue making questionable life decisions without involving heavy equipment. 🤭🐸

One of the best parts of working outdoors is getting to look out for the wildlife that calls these spaces home.

I think I finally figured out why I love the zero-turn mower so much. It’s the same reason I love horses. There’s something about sitting on top of that much power and learning how to guide it with confidence. Once you get comfortable, it stops feeling like you’re operating a machine and starts feeling like you’re working with it. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a pretty amazing feeling. 😎
