Friday Floats...
Every Friday I will be posting a shot taken from my favorite place… the seat of my kayak. So many of these shots I have from over the years will include great scenery, but I think this one is my favorite because it reminds me of a great night out on the water with one of my kids. Usually rivers are my thing, but you can't beat the southern end of Ladue Reservoir early in the morning or late in the evening.

Clevelanders are familiar with where the Cuyahoga River ends at Lake Erie, but have you seen where it begins? The source is only 30 miles away from Cleveland in Burton, but it flows 100 miles to get there. Because…you know…it's crooked.

Great news! After four months of limited service, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is back in business. Erosion along the banks of the Cuyahoga River near the tracks has been repaired, allowing for operations to resume. Romantic, Valentine's Day themed dinner events will be held on upcoming weekends and the popular National Park Scenic excursions begin March 4. Check out CVSR.org for more details and schedules.

Enough of this snow and rain. Can we get back to the good stuff?

Sunrise is my favorite time to paddle and LaDue Reservoir in Geauga County seldom disappoints.

LaDue was formed by damming Bridge Creek and Black Brook, both of which are tributaries of the Cuyahoga River. It is one of three reservoirs which hold the City of Akron's water supply.

It's Friday! Do you know what that means? Of course you don't because I just got serious about sharing my images like four days ago. Starting next week Fridays are "Friday Floats", when I share views from my kayak, usually on the Cuyahoga.

A winter view of the Cuyahoga at Eldon Russell Park near Burton, part of the Geauga Park District. A newly redesigned canoe and kayak launch provides easy access. My favorite spot on the river, the current is so gentle it allows for both downstream and upstream paddling - but not today.

A winter walk on the Towpath Trail through Cascade Locks Park, part of Summit Metroparks in Akron, OH. The Towpath Trail is over 100 miles of Rural, Urban, National Park, Great Lake, Crooked River, Trees, Fields and Bridges. Lots and lots of bridges.

After crossing over the Cuyahoga River, this hiker begins her walk along the Headwaters Trail in Mantua, Ohio. The trail crosses a continental watershed divide between the Cuyahoga River Watershed and the Mahoning River Watershed - meaning the snow she is walking on now will melt into the Cuyahoga and drain into Lake Erie and ultimately the North Atlantic but a couple miles down the trail, the snow melt will instead find its way to the Mahoning, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
