Communications in the arts word is hella messy.

Messaging everywhere is hella messy.

Here at Shiny Penny we’re doing some deep thinking on showing kids faces on socials moving forward. And that is heartbreaking.

This is not an easy time for anyone to navigate. Be kind. show grace. And help more than berate.

About the business name...My name is Keli Schimelpfenig, and I started this whole thing.

Because Schimelpfenig (shim-ul-finn-egg) isn’t exactly the easiest name to pronounce, I decided to name the business after what my family had long been told was its English translation: “shiny penny.”

I happily cruised along with that name for several years. Then I met a couple from Germany. When I told them my last name, they smiled and said, “Moldy penny.”
I’m sure the confused, slightly horrified look on my face prompted the woman to explain that Schimelpfenig actually translates to “moldy penny.” A quick visit to Google Translate confirmed the truth: my family had been living a dirty little linguistic lie.

Someone later asked if I planned to change the business name.
Absolutely not.

The only name I’d consider changing is my own. Keli Glänzendpfennig has a certain ring to it, don’t you think?

Field Trip Tuesday!
One of the best parts of being a photographer is getting to see where people’s stories take them next.
I first photographed Lauren and Austin’s engagement at Squire’s Castle. In September 2024, I joined them again for their wedding at Vosh and Georgetown & Vosh in Lakewood.
Now Lauren has opened another door, quite literally, with Fox & Ivory Boutique inside the historic Olde Jail House at Grand Pacific Junction in Olmsted Falls.
So, naturally, I had to make it a Field Trip Tuesday.
Photography relationships are funny and wonderful that way. You meet someone during one meaningful season, but the story does not stop when the gallery is delivered. Over the years, I get to watch couples build families, change careers, chase ideas and create places of their own.
I am so grateful when the people who once trusted me with one chapter invite me back for the next.
Congratulations, Lauren and Austin. Fox & Ivory Boutique is full of color, personality and delightful things you did not know you needed. It feels very much like Lauren, and it is especially fun to see a new small business taking shape inside a building with nearly 150 years of stories behind it.

Consider this your annual Cleveland fall sunlight warning. 😂🍂

Tomorrow night is our last 8pm+ sunset of 2026.

From here, things start moving FAST.

Sept. 18 → 7:30pm sunset
Sept. 22 → Fall officially arrives
Oct. 5 → our final 7pm+ sunset
Nov. 1 → Daylight Saving Time ends and suddenly we’re eating dinner in darkness
Dec. 6 → earliest sunset of the year
Dec. 22 → Winter Solstice and WE START GETTING IT BACK! JIGGITY

For my photographer friends: plan accordingly.

For families thinking about fall photos: this is why those coveted after-work evening session times disappear so quickly as we get deeper into fall.

And for the rest of us?

Enjoy those 8pm sunsets while you still can.

I had no intention of doing a headshot session swap with a 4-year-old when I woke up today.

No makeup.
Editing gremlin and lawn mowing outfit.

But when a she gives you a "common I got this" look, you say "ok lill miss, you got this."

And you’re going to see some new upgrade options when you book a session.

The ability to view the whole gallery and select your favorites from the whole session. Check.

The ability to add more photos than the original package. Check.

The ability to not change a thing and continue to have the photographer select the best-of’s. Not going anywhere.

Same great online gallery delivery and service. Just more options.
(Upgrade options are active on all mini fall and holiday sessions and will be added to our half hour and hour sessions by September 1.)
