🌙 What Zakaria (or Zachariah Night) Is
Zakaria is a cherished Iraqi tradition celebrated on the first Sunday of the Islamic month of Sha‘bān. It’s rooted in the story of Prophet Zakaria, whose prayers for a child were answered with the birth of Yahya (John the Baptist). Over generations, the night evolved into a cultural celebration of hope, wishes, blessings, and community.
✨ How do we Celebrate It
We prepare a “Zakaria Tray” filled with:• Candles
• Sweets
• Basil or other fragrant herbs
• Colorful ribbons
• Sometimes lily branches
• Children sing traditional chants as they go door to door sharing sweets not in the US ☺️
• Women often lead the preparations, gathering symbolic items and lighting candles.
• People make wishes, vows, or prayers for the coming year — especially for fertility, health, and good fortune.
💛 What It Represents
• Hope after hardship
• Renewal and blessings
• Community bonding
• Gratitude for answered prayers
