Ahhh… the weekend! Great Saturday morning to you! Hopefully you’ve got something fun going on today. 😎

This is what Saturday evening looks like in the fall in Amish Country. The roads are typically very quiet. By the time there’s about an hour of daylight left in the sky, most of the Amish farming families have completed their work for the day. All that’s left to do are tasks close to the farmhouse and the barn such as raking leaves and wrangling animals such as horses, cows, and sheep. For those traveling by horse and buggy, most try to make it home before it gets dark.

This photo was taken at the very end of the day with only about 30 minutes of light left. The actual raw image was a little darker than this but I used photo editing software to help brighten it a tad. In this scene, an Amish horse and buggy make their way south along the wavy Fountain Nook Road in Maysville, Wayne County, OH as they pass a bright yellow tree at the peak of its color. 🍂🍂🍂

After a fantastic Saturday shooting in Amish Country, this was the last composition I took on October 28, 2023 before my light ran out. And it seems to me, it’s the perfect photo for wrapping up this week’s theme.

Wishing all my friends and followers a restful and fun weekend. 🙂 Hard to believe it, but we’re just under 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving. Time flies when you’re taking pictures! 😉

You did it! You reached Friday! Pat yourself on the back! 👋🥳

The way I see it, one good corn stalk deserves another. 🌽 This time, a number of corn stalks have been bound into stock by an Amish farmer. Taken on Fountain Nook road just north of Maysville, Wayne County, OH, the use of my telephoto lens really helped to emphasize the distance between the top of the corn shock and the newly sided barn way in the distance at the bottom of the hill. As I have mentioned many times, the gray skies of northeast Ohio that persist from late October through April can get tiresome, even depressing at times, however they are fantastic for evening out the light and color, especially in the fall. 🍁🍂 Just another beautiful but simple scene from Ohio’s Amish Country. 🙂

As always, enjoy your Friday and your weekend! 😎

Good morning and Happy Thursday!

Naturally, fall is harvest season, and in Ohio there’s a lot of corn to harvest! 🌽🌽🌽 Many Amish pick corn by hand, but some use horse-drawn mechanical harvesters such as the one in this photo. 🐴 Taken late in the evening just outside of Fredericksburg, OH, this harvester is parked against a stack of freshly cut corn stalks. Seeing as how Sunday is the day of rest for the Amish community, this scene likely remained unchanged until early Monday morning. Even though we’re past peak color, the oak trees are showing off some intense dark reds and browns in the background.

Have a great Thursday; Friday is just around the corner! 😊

We’re halfway through the week. Good Wednesday morning to you!

Returning to my Amish Country outing on Saturday, October 28, 2023, I came across a beautiful farm on a hillside in Salt Creek, Wayne County, OH. Many of the trees were already bare, but one particular maple tree was still showcasing a beautiful orange glow. 🍁 In this scene, cows are grazing, a mother is raking leaves near the farm house, and a small child is helping to load leaves into a large wheel barrow (albeit these details are hard to see without having access to a hi-res version of this photo).

The ever-present fall overcast skies of Northeast Ohio can often make a scene flat. ☁️ This is why I shoot with a tripod as much as possible. If there is any detail in the clouds at all, you can usually flush it out with a short exposure. This final image (like so many of images) is a composite of 2 images; one properly exposed for the farm scene, and another to flush out the details in the clouds. Techniques like this can take an ordinary scene and elevate it into something much more spectacular. With a little strategic burning and dodging here and there, this was the final result.

I hope you have a great Wednesday! 😎

Late night ‘Train Tuesday’ post coming at you on this fine Tuesday evening. Don't worry; I know how much you live for Train Tuesday and I would never let you down! 😆

It’s Friday, October 19, 2012, and a westbound CSX general merchandise train is passing underneath a long abandoned New York Central signal bridge in Perry, OH. In the background, the fall foliage is definitely at peak, showcasing a full array of color. 🍁 Fast forward to 2023. CSX 7536 is long off the roster and the signal bridge has long since been removed. Today, Perry is still a great place to railfan, featuring plenty of daily action on CSX, as well as the parallel Norfolk Southern line just off the right edge of the frame.

Short post this evening. Get a good sleep. 😴 Back tomorrow with more from Amish Country. 😊

It’s Monday morning (sigh 😅), which means for most of us, it’s back to work. But for some of us, Monday morning means back to school, and it’s no different for Amish children. 🍎📘✏️

Just down the street from the double-windmill scene that I love to shoot stands Paint Valley School in Maysville. Amish school buildings tend to be very small. Believe it or not, this particular school is actually a little bit larger than most in this region. With a line of maple trees still showcasing some beautiful color, I wanted to come up with a creative composition between the trees and the schoolhouse. 🍁

At the main entrance of the property, there also stood an old and unpainted wood fence. It occurred to me that the texture of the wood fence would make a fantastic frame for this composition. Today’s feature photo is a compilation of two images. One image is properly focused and exposed for the schoolhouse scene, and the other for the wood fence. The two images were carefully blended in Photoshop, and this is the final result. What do you think? I really like the way this final image came together.

Whether you’re at work, school, or up to something else today, I hope you have a great Monday. 😊

Sadly, the weekend is almost over, but hopefully you had an enjoyable Sunday. As always, it’s a new week, which means time for a new theme. All this week, we’re jumping back one more time to Amish Country because no matter the weather or conditions, I simply love spending time down here shopping, antiquing, dining, and of course, playing with my camera. All the photos featured this week will be from my Amish Country outing last Saturday, October 28, 2023. I hope you enjoy them. 🙂

Even after the fall color is past prime, the scenery in Wayne and Holmes Counties is still something to behold. In late October/early November, Amish farms are working hard to harvest their corn crop 🌽. When you visit Amish Country in mid- to late fall, corn shocks can be seen lining the rolling hills of this region. While driving around, I found a beautiful oak tree and a corn shock. All I had to do was wait for a horse 🐴and buggy to pass through this scene. I went with a slower shutter speed for this particular composition because I wanted to show the action of the horse and buggy in motion. The skies may have been overcast, but that never stops me from finding new compositions to try.

I look forward to sharing my best photos from my October 28th outing all this week. And as always, thank you for stopping by my social media pages. Wishing you a relaxing Sunday evening. 😊

The weekend is here! Hope your Saturday is off to a great start! 😎

It’s the last day of “One More Splash of Fall Color Week,” and while almost all of my photos have been larger landscapes, today we’ll be zooming back down to ground level where the leaves have carpeted the soil. Last year, my wife and I went for a hike near the Beaver Marsh in Cuyahoga Valley National Park on October 29th. We had one mission; shoot as many fall scenes with our camera and new video camcorder as possible. While hiking down the towpath trail, Melissa heard the sound of something rustling on the ground. After stopping and searching for a few seconds, she quickly discovered a garter snake slithering its way through freshly fallen oak leaves. 🐍🍂 I quickly headed over, and for the next 30 minutes or so, we followed this snake along the path and shot both stills and HD video. I’m sure it felt like a movie star because it did a great job posing for us! 🎬🎥🐍😄

Of all the photos I took, this one of the garter snake pausing before slithering across the sinus of an oak leaf was my favorite. And to see it rummaging around the forest so late in October was extra special. It’s scenes like this that serve as a simple reminder that not all fall photos have to be large landscapes of trees changing colors; there’s just as much beauty to be found on the forest floor! The next time you go for a hike, don’t just use your eyes; use your ears; you never know what might be slithering just a few feet from you! 🐍😊

Wishing you both a productive and relaxing weekend!

Good morning and Happy Friday!! 🥳

Let's do a fun photo for this sunny Friday morning in Cleveland! 🌞 Today’s photo was taken in the same place I shot those leaves under the water which I shared a few days ago. Most of the photos I share everyday are taken with my Canon EOS 80D, but today’s photo was taken with my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It’s pretty amazing how far camera phones have cone in just a few years.

This is Double Decker Falls, located in South Chagrin Reservation, part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. Taken just a few weeks ago on October 15, 2023, most of my photo session was spent in the rain with the aid of an umbrella. Fortunately, I did a have a few minutes here and there where the clouds parted and the sun briefly came out. This was one of those rare moments. The trees changing color, white puffy clouds, blue sky, and warm tones of the sun made standing in the rain a long time worth the wait. 🌦This composition is a vertical panorama, which explains how I was able to frame the scene with trees all-around.

The fall colors may have faded significantly in northeast Ohio by now, but there’s still plenty of beautiful scenery to be taken in. As always, I encourage everyone to get out of the house a little this weekend. Even if you can’t hike, go for a drive locally and see what’s happening in your community. 🍁😊

Enjoy your Friday; you’ve earned it! 😎

It’s Thursday, and the week is moving along nicely!

Today’s fall photo was taken on October 8, 2022. We’re in Rittman, OH, right near the border of Medina and Wayne counties. After an afternoon exploring the area with my camera, I’d completely forgotten that an ‘almost’ full moon was due to rise over the countryside. While driving, I saw it coming up over the horizon and it was HUGE! 🌕 I immediately scrambled to find a scene, and a beautiful white barn flanked by bright red maple trees on the western edge of town fit the bill perfectly. This composition turned out to be my favorite. It just exudes that ‘Ohio’ feel. 🌕🍁🐄

Shooting full (or almost full) moons isn’t easy because the difference in the brightness of the moon vs. the scene becomes more extreme as the scene gets darker and the moon gets brighter. Unless you capture the moon right before the sun goes down, and right as it’s coming up over the horizon, 2 different exposures are often needed to even the scene out, and that’s what I’ve done in this photo.

Have a great Thursday; Friday is just around the corner! 😊

Good morning, especially to all my fellow Clevelanders. It’s Nov 1, and November wasted no time reminding us that winter will soon be here. Many of us in northeast Ohio woke up to our first snowfall of the year. 🥶❄️ I got about 2.5” at my house and had to break out the scrapper for the first time this season. It won’t be long before I’ll be featuring winter shots, but for now, let’s keep enjoying the colors of fall. 🙂🍁🍂

Today we’re in South Chagrin Reservation, part of the Cleveland Metroparks System. While wondering around the banks of the Chagrin River near the Henry Church Rock Overlook trailhead, I set up my camera gear to take a picture of several red and orange maple leaves stuck in the river. After taking a few photos, a yellow birch tree leaf got lodged in my scene. 🍂 It only stayed there for about 5 seconds, and then was quickly carried away. While it was stuck, I was only able to grab 2 photos but the burst of yellow was exactly what I needed to spice up this scene. Nature is simply amazing! 😌

I love the balance between the cool and warm tones of this fall photo. The water is blue, white, crystal clear, and cold, while the leaves are warm and vibrant. Taken just a few weeks ago, this scene reminds of today in Cleveland! The sun is out, and the light snowfall is sticking to the yellow, orange brown leaves still clinging to many of the trees. Simply beautiful to look at. 🍂🍁💦🌊

Wishing you a fantastic start to the month of November! 😊

Good morning! It’s Tuesday, October 31, 2023 and today is my favorite holiday of the year! 😃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! 🎃🎃🎃

It’s also ‘Train Tuesday,’ and boy have I got a great one for this special Halloween edition of ‘Train Tuesday!’ 😁🎃

Almost 11 years ago, I came across the most amazing abandoned farmhouse in the town of Liberty, OH, just a few miles west of Maple Grove. The farmhouse was on an active farm with a newer farmhouse built off to the side. For whatever reason, the owners never chose to demolish the old farmhouse. The last time I drove by here (about 1 year ago), the house was still standing, although most of it had collapsed into a huge pile of lumber! The creepy old house stands just a few hundred feet from Norfolk Southern’s ex-Nickel Plate Railroad mainline which runs between Bellevue and Fostoria.

In this scene, an eastbound NS train thunders by the house, no doubt shaking the structure to is bones! And of course, I had to make this a black & white image; after all, it is Halloween! Last, take a very close look at the large window on the 2nd floor. Do you see what looks like a pair of eyes staring back at you in the dark? Those white dots are 100% real and not Photoshopped! Kind of makes you wonder what lurks inside (wuh hah hah hah haha!!) 🏚👻

The sun is out in Cleveland this morning, but we finally got our first frost, and it’s definitely a cold one out there right now. Tonight, it’s going to be cold with rain and snow for trick-or-treating in much of the Midwest, so dress warmly, but don’t let that stop you and the kids from having a little fun tonight. 🍭🍬🍫

Wishing everyone a ‘spook-tacular’ Halloween! 😜 🎃🏚👻🍂🍁
