Edit with meeeeeeee ✨

I always try to nail exposure in camera (ofc that doesn’t always happen but here we were pretty close, only a +.1 bump)!

Then we crop and fix angles, and I personally like to do white balance next!

For WB, I don’t shoot auto WB or natural light auto, I always shoot in Kelvin so I have a consistent white balance base across my gallery to begin my adjustments from - for me this is especialllllly important in studio sessions where I’m in the same few sets and that consistency is key to keeping the gallery cohesive!

Then I use the presets I’ve built in my favorite style for tone curve (hello micro contrast 👋🏼), light (contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks), and I almost always add a small texture bump to help the image really come to life! I like to remove distractions after I add texture because sometimes the texture emphasizes or hides certain things (like scuff marks on a c*c wall).

Next is global color calibration, color grading, and then my HSL. Again I’ve built preset favorites I add in layers and adjust as needed (I feel like I don’t see anyone else build presets in layers but it’s my fav).

Color calibration, color grading, and HSL are huge pieces of what makes every photographers work so individual to them. My blues and my greens are my pride and joy lol (followed by my whites, blacks, and midtones) I’ve put so many hours into perfecting my preferences on these so I ofc do another WB pass after the color changes to make sure it all balances the way it should!

And last we mask the background to adjust whites & texture.

Then we’re done, one image down, a million to go!

I didn’t add crop to this pic list (bc the crop showed the clients full face) but I always start with exposure and crop simultaneously while culling (a sin, I know, but it’s what I do)! This client is no faces on IG (but she was still excited to be shown faceless on website and socials!) so we’re ofc respecting that!

there’s so much I could say about this project but I’ll let it rest for a while after this 🤍

Wella’s make it you campaign is making beauty deeply personal, or in this case, helping you uncover ✨that girl✨

I absolutely love working with Joelly Cavazos 🇲🇽 🇺🇸 and Ally Mendez 🇻🇪 🇺🇸 so of course I reached out to them before running a model call. I was so excited they said yes, and got to work making the storyline and shot lists. I love creating a framework for campaigns so I can have a plan ahead of time, but still leaving tons of room for creatives on the spot. I also love sharing the shot lists ahead of time so everyone on set is on the same page about vibes, angles, etc.

we started with photographing as the the models Natalia Velez Rodríguez & Ashley Macias arrived, product, and ofc product integration while the models were getting their hair started.

I always start with my safe shots and move out more creative, culling is a true nightmare bc of it, but then I know my bases are covered and I have tons of time for creatives on each set, the creatives are almost always where my favorite pics of the set end up.

After the models finished getting their hair done, we did a few fun getting ready pics and then moved on to the finished hair pics!

I gave quick overview in this video of the composition and editing highlights you need to recreate some of these shots!

So through this series we see two girls coming to the salon, being styled by Wella products (it is a Wella spec shoot ofc) and immediately becoming their inner ✨it girl✨ w/paparazzi flash & all (ty direct flash)

she is beauty, she is grace 💛 and sometimes it really is as simple as twirling in a fairy dress and playing peekaboo

not pictured, of course: the Magna-Tile dragons, the Chick-fil-A minis, & the baby repeatedly trying to add Little People to the set, but honestly, that’s what makes photographing kids so fun

it’s finding the beauty of childhood right in the middle of the everyday chaos

LIGHTING STUDY // DIRECT FLASH

If you know me, you know I love flash. If you’ve shot with me, you’ve probably heard my flashes echoing in your dreams long after your session. 💀

Direct flash is making a comeback, and it’s so well deserved.

It’s dramatic. The brightest highlights. The deepest shadows. Done poorly, every little flaw is front and center. Done well, and it becomes that unmistakable early 2000s it girl paparazzi energy.

Direct flash demands your attention. It asks you to stop and stare. And my favorite part? The shadows. They don’t hide the story, they frame it.

Sometimes art doesn’t whisper.
Sometimes art just needs to scream. ✨
