I wanted to curate a small gallery of images for this post because I know, understand, and value the power of photographs. But as I started to put it together, I stopped myself -- I thought about the families, the victims, the survivors, and the people who have been through similar experiences -- and decided I don't need to share heartbreaking and traumatic photos.
In another part of my life, I'm a writer. I'm a multi-published author, in fact. So I also know, understand, and value the power of words.
This country was founded by immigrants who fought against a tyrannical King. Those men then decided that their children would be citizens of this new country, and then tried to systematically wipe out the Native peoples.
More than one of the states belonged to other countries before this one fought wars to win the land.
Diversity through immigration is a STRENGTH. So many people would not exist if immigration didn't happen.
Is there an immigration procedure that should be followed? Yes, there is. And there are people who are following that procedure that are still being detained & moved by a federal agency that has almost no training and no oversight. So, this isn't about people who crossed the border illegally.
There are citizens of this country who have been murdered by that same agency. In broad daylight. On the street.
If you see what's happening in Minnesota and in other places across the US and are supporting it, then I'm not the right photographer for you.
