The Pennsylvania Summer Choral Society concert.

I shot the summer concert this weekend. Ive shot all three concerts for Conner Hummel, and I look forward to it each year.

This years concert was at the Altoona High School auditorium, a really nice space, not only for the music but for photography. The sound baffles along the wings of the hall and the sound absorbing material at the back are so well done that the sound is full but with out an annoying echo. A well done auditorium makes the sound better, full, and clean. i need to go back and sit in the audience to find the sweet spot and be immersed in the sound.

the design also allowed me to move around pretty freely and not be in the way or too distracting to the audience, that was awesome.

I did get access to the catwalk during warm ups. its a seriously cool space that I would love to go back to and shoot just for how clean and organized it is. given the nature of the space we were there for only a few minutes. I took some photos from and angle no one ever gets to see and the door was locked again.

the concert itself was fantastic. Conner is so energetic and chooses unique styles of music to perform...mostly im looking for a shot, and only sort of get to listen to the music. I really did try to listen to this concert and enjoy the music. They did Shenandoah, the gentleman that had to solo did a fantastic job...I took a few photos of him and then leaned against the wall and just listened...I should have snuck into the center of the hall to get the full sound but I didnt want to disturb anyone else.

This is only a small set of what I took, and some that magically apeared on my camera ( Who could that be) the rest will be uploaded to my site, and the link posted when they are done.

Thanks for having me back again this year...maybe ill see you all in NYC next summer

ps (Photo Stuff) its fun getting unique angles on a shot, sometimes its a NO but Ive found that a polite ask, without pressure will often get me access to places that arent open to the public. and while not the most amazing photos its always fun to see the world from a new angle.

I also shot these with the electronic shutter so there was no sound...that also meant that I had WAY to many photos to look at, I need to slow the shutter speed down a bit when in electronic mode. it shoots to many photos per second to deal with.
but being silent works great in a concert hall so your not disturbing those around you.

Im going to have to enforce some rules here...if you use my cameras you cant take photos of me...thats against the rules.

Jett’s senior shoot this week. We walked a lot during this shoot, the tunnels are a cool, strange, local hangout. Dragging equipment this far for a senior shoot was a bit of work but worth it. I would love to know the name of the artist that did this work, it’s sweet! Also someone should Gibbs slap the morons who have to paint FU on everything ( Photoshop took care of most of that). Took some time to play with my new filters from Prism Lens FX first time using them in a shoot and I’m loving it! When you walk a mile to take photos you have to have gear you trust…as always shot on my trusty Canon USA R5 and lit with Elinchrom Ones… peace

This set, some with Jolynn and some of the merry go round were me experimenting.

the three with her standing there are long exposure second curtain sync shots. only a little bit of photoshop to make these work, I had to remove my lightstand. in order to get enough light on her I had to have the stand really close.

then it was a 2 second photo at F8 and the flash at full power to get close to having a good shot. Im intrigued buy the combination of a portrait with a long exposure shot. so many small technical details have to work just right to make it work that im never completely happy with them. Each time I do one I make some progress but also some new mistakes...or challenges.

as I walked back to the van I passed the carrossel im sure people were looking at me strangely, no I wasnt taking photos of any of the kids on the thing I was trying to get a good panning shot of the horses going around and around but they also go up and down so I had to match their motion to "stop" them but keep the shutter open long enough to see the motion blur...mostly a fail but a fun experiment anyway, I dont shoot motor sports where this technique is used all the time, so Its not something im very good at. Ive done a bit of it in sports but the situation has to be right for it to work well.

Master Showman. part 1

the kids that won each livestock grand champion went head to head showing one of each of the large animals at the fair. they could not show their own animal and many were showing animals that they have never shown...it was fun to watch.

the Pie fundraiser...

Rodney got his yearly shave, and everyone got their fill of pie...and not a good apple pie, or even a lemon meringue but a nasty mix of whip cream and chocolate and strawberry syrup...gross. Josiah had his first taste of the pie, his FFA students enjoying the serving up of pie after pie.

the fundraiser was a success...and we all enjoyed the spectacle...glad that it wasnt us up there...
