DOWNEY WOODPECKER: A quiet and shy member of our back porch bird family. An interesting factoid: when the downey lands on a feeder post it immediately starts to climb. When the white-breasted nuthatch lands it is upside down and immediately starts down the post head first. Between the two of them they will find any insects hiding under the bark.😎

GULF FRITILLARY: This one has come calling for two or three days in a row. Making the most of our lantana and the warm sunshine that is remaining. I posted one a few weeks ago that I photographed from the top and it was about worn out. This one is showing all of its natural beauty.

I photographed the last hummingbird here on the lantana on Oct 11. I went and put out a hummingbird feeder for late arrivals passing through and I got a couple of takers. I don't put out feeders while the flowers are plush but I do put out feeders when the flowers stop producing enough nectar. That's when the hummingbirds need it. I don't take it down until November and I keep it fresh until then. Let arrivals really need help.

ANOTHER "NEW" BUTTERFLY: At first I thought this might be a monarch migrating through but there was no big black stripe on each wing. Then I thought it might be a viceroy since they are common in this area but it was missing the same black strip as the monarch plus it didn't have the row of black dots along the bottom of both wings. Then I thought it might be a gulf fritillary but I couldn't even hope since they are very scarce around here and I hadn't seen one all season. So I photographed it and looked it up and, SURPRISE!!, it is a gulf fritillary. Found mostly in the Gulf regions of Florida and Texas, I don't know how that one got up here but I appreciate the fact that it did and I got to add it to my list. It is late in the season and its wings are wearing out with a big chunk of one wing missing now. This one was even more striking when photographed from the underside with sun coming through the wings.

RED-EYED VIREO: passing through on his way from Canada to near the Pantanal for a winter vacation. That's a long trip for such a small bird. There were a bunch of them at Liberty Park yesterday but they are exceedingly had to photograph unless one gets lucky. I shot over 300 frames and never did get a good closeup this time.

AMERICAN SNOUT BUTTERFLY: never heard of it but I did recognize the pig-snout on this one, I knew I had seen them before but it took quite a bit of looking to find a picture and identify it. We should have quire a few of them around here because they live around hackberry trees and Lord knows we are blessed with them. The snout butterflies are dull brown with an orange streak on the wings. Their wings look ragged so predators will think they are a bunch of dead leaves when they rest with their wings up.

JUVENILE GREAT BLUE HERON: I have a file of GBH shots that I have done over the years. Now I have one me. I made several shots of this one in flight but it was so close not all of it fit in the frame. I waited and got several more as it landed with hardly a splash.

LITTLE GREEN HERON: been a while since I did one of these. Took my camera to The Pond and walked by myself this morning. Everything went well until the sun got hot and I started to wilt. I still got some shots of this green heron and a great blue heron but then I headed for the car.

PROUD MAMA MUSCOVY: we went to The Pond between showers yesterday afternoon. Found that the white muscovy that had been missing for a while had reappeared with 13 little "muscovites" in tow. She was very proud and protective of them. I hope they mature quickly and put on enough weight to survive the winter. Winter is supposed to be hard this year.

RAIN: still raining and I'm so glad. Everything around here is parched. This is a light misty rain most of the time and it's exactly what we need for two or three days.

CAROLINA WREN WEARING JEWELRY: I got a shot of this little wren this afternoon and after I chimped it I noticed that it wearing a band on its right leg. I think I got a shot of a wren with a wrist band last spring but I never was certain. This has to be the same bird and this time it is confirmed. I wonder who banded it and where and why. If you know anything about this I hope you will let me know in the comments section below.
