Today, Tennessee lost a piece of its heart. 💔

Dolly Parton was more than a country music legend. She was Appalachian storytelling, kindness, humor, grit and a whole lot of sparkle.

From the mountains of East Tennessee to stages around the world, Dolly never forgot where she came from and she made generations of us proud to call this place home.

Her songs became part of our memories. Her generosity changed lives. And somehow, no matter how famous she became, she always still felt like one of us.

Some people simply come from a place.

Dolly became part of Tennessee itself.

Rest easy, Dolly. 🦋

They Actually Ordered Their HOUSE From the Sears Catalog

Imagine sitting down with the Sears catalog and picking out more than clothes, tools, or furniture.

You could pick out your house. 🏠

Beginning in 1908, Sears sold homes through its mail-order catalogs, shipping the materials that would become houses across America.

And here’s what makes this story even better: some of those homes are still standing today.

You might have one in your own hometown and never known it.

More than 100 years ago, young women were hired to paint glowing watch dials with radium.

To keep their tiny brushes pointed, they were taught a technique called “lip, dip, paint.” They would shape the brush with their lips, dip it into radioactive paint, and repeat the process all day long.

They were told it was safe.

What happened next became one of the most disturbing stories in American workplace history. These women became known as the Radium Girls, and their fight helped change the way America protects workers.

For most of American history, church wasn't just where people worshipped.

It was where they learned to sing.

Long before music lessons, radio, or recording studios, churches and singing schools taught ordinary Americans harmony, shaped the sound of gospel music, and influenced everything from country music to rock and roll.

One thing this series changed for me is where I look for important stories.

We tend to assume history happens in famous places or big cities.

But from mountain communities and Delta towns to church fellowship halls, some of the biggest chapters in American culture started in places most people drive right past.
