Ever wonder why some women choose home birth?

Ask the ones who’ve had both.

Not the ones who’ve only ever known one way.
The ones who’ve experienced hospital birth… and then chose something different the next time.

Because what they’ll tell you is:

– The difference in how they were spoken to
– The difference in how their body was trusted
– The difference in pace, pressure, and decision-making
– The difference between being managed and being supported

Two completely different environments.
Two completely different experiences.

And once you’ve felt both, it tells you everything you need to know.

What a crazy year 2025 has been! I decided to take the year off to focus on homeschooling my children. The only birth I photographed was all of the way in Colorado! I had the honoring of watching my nephew come into this world! I realized today that with being so busy, I never wrote about his birth in my blog so here is the slideshow instead that tells their sweet story! Enjoy and bring a tissue 🥹

Why my next pregnancy I’m hiring a photographer…

Because THIS… me, throwing up into a hospital puke bag with a catheter in is the ONLY picture my husband took during my 2nd labor & delivery. The only one. Besides a couple videos of me completely out of it.

Out of the entire miracle-of-life, woman-warrior, “I am literally bringing a human into the world” experience… this is what he chose to capture. 🤦🏼‍♀️📸

And listen, I love this man. Truly. But if I do this again, I’m bringing a hype woman. A designated photo-taker. Someone who knows the difference between “capture the miracle” and “capture her absolutely unhinged in a hospital gown.” Because moms deserve proof that we did more than vomit and sweat through the most intense day of our lives.

But hey… at least it’s authentic. Raw. Real. And a beautiful reminder of how motherhood starts: with humor, humility, and a man who thinks he did something because he held my water cup 💀

In the U.S., postpartum complications are the leading cause of maternal death.
Not pregnancy. Not birth.
But what happens after.

And for moms who had a C section?
Let’s call it what it is:
Major abdominal surgery.
Muscles cut. Organs moved. Nerves severed.
And they’re sent home in 2-3 days… with a newborn.
No nurse. No real recovery plan.
Just “see you in six weeks.”

Then they’re expected to smile. Function. Breastfeed. Entertain visitors.
While healing. While bleeding. While breaking.
And if they struggle?
They’re told it was “the easy way out.”

Easy?
There is nothing easy about being stitched back together and left to survive.
There is nothing easy about healing while keeping another human alive with no rest and no help.

We don’t talk about it enough.
We don’t support mothers enough.
We don’t respect C-sections, or birth trauma, or the postpartum period like we should.

And it’s killing mothers.

This isn’t okay.
We deserve better.

No matter how much we plan, sometimes birth can come with a whirlwind of unknowns and that's okay! It's all just part of your unique birth story. Jensen's entrance to the world was one of those. It was so amazing watching his parents overcome all of the obstacles it took to bring him safely earth-side. I'm so excited to share their story!
