My grandmother, Wilma Laura Anderson, photographed everything.

I’m not sure if she would have ever considered herself a photographer, but there wasn’t a moment she missed. Stacks of printed photographs, tucked neatly into labeled envelopes, were evidence of her careful observation and her attention to detail.

I remember her carrying a small digital camera with her into her later years, hung from her wrist on a strap. From school reunions to family gatherings, she documented everything, especially what most people often overlooked.

I now regret I didn’t ask her more about her love for the craft, what initially inspired her or if she had ever dreamt of pursuing it beyond a hobby, but unfortunately, by the time my interest was piqued, she was already gone. I wasn’t all that interested in photography until 2013, right before I moved to Haiti. She died two years later, on December 10, 2015.

My dad recently sent me these scans from her high school yearbook, including the photo I now have printed and framed in my home.

Here’s to asking more questions and printing more photographs in 2024. Because you never realize the value of a moment until it becomes a memory 🤍

I never want to take for granted the way photography has allowed me the privilege to travel. But rarely do I get to travel just for me.

Right before COVID, I had made grand plans of filling my calendar in 2020 with adventurous trips and foreign destinations but of course, those dreams came to an abrupt halt. And like the rest of the world, I have anxiously awaited the day I could travel internationally again. While I never imagined it would be to Norway, immersing myself into another country has reminded me just how much I missed this — encountering places and people that challenge and influence my worldview, giving me a different perspective on this thing called life.

There is so much to see, so much to learn, so much to explore and so much connection to be shared. Sometimes it simply requires stepping over one border and into the next.
