As a freelancer this is challenging. I have seen this happening here in the Nati as well. I also believe technology has given the ability for anyone to be a “photographer” today. There is no law but I see companies moving this direction. Companies bring in young less experienced workers, then offer them up a full time gig they take it, and I’m out! No offense to any of these people, opportunity comes you take it. Or companies do the work in house. Which in turn has slowly decreased the # of potential clients I have due to my rate. I have certain skill sets and years of experience that allows me that rate. I love my job, whether I’m building a set, photographing a product or person, setting up grip and lighting on location, or remodeling a bathroom or kitchen. I’ve been lucky enough that when one door closes another opens.
Sure I could take a pay cut and take that full time gig, but I would loose my freedom so I choose to struggle at times but I keep pushing forward. I am grateful to have the ability to take the jobs I want in turn giving me the ability to spend my time as I choose. The ability to schedule around important times in my daughter’s life , which is my top priority. That being said I’m at a point where I need to start marketing myself more putting my work out there. In photography I have been mainly the guy behind the scenes since 2006 making it happen. I’m looking to be behind the lens more so take a look at my website and think of me for your photography needs.
