I?ve always been drawn to the character and simplicity of everyday objects, particularly those that have a connection to the past.

For this still life, I wanted to capture the nostalgia of traditional wet shaving. The safety razor, shaving brush, and bowl represent a time when even something as ordinary as shaving was a bit more of a ritual.

I chose a rustic wooden background and subdued lighting to create a quiet, vintage atmosphere. The contrast between the dark objects and the white shaving lather adds texture and helps bring the composition together.

My goal was to take a few ordinary objects and create something that feels timeless.

The photo was taken from my home in the East End of Cincinnati, on the banks of the Ohio River.

As a painter who happens to love photography, this photo of the Ohio River, taken a few years ago, reminded me of paintings from the Hudson River School. And it reinforced that the best camera is the one you have; I didn?t have time to grab my DSLR, so I took this with my iPhone 5s. I am also legally blind, with very little sight remaining, so still being able to compose shots like this is among my greatest pleasures.
