Most homeowners think the privacy risk of listing their home is the address being public. The address was already public. The real risk is everything inside the photos.

Family pictures on the wall identify the occupants. Mail on the counter shows full names. A graduation photo shows what school your kid attends. A team jersey on a hook shows what field they practice on. A medication bottle in a bathroom shows what's wrong. A pet's name tag on a bowl shows the dog's name — and if you reuse it as a password hint, it shows that too.
Real estate listing photos are commercial advertising. They syndicate to MLS, Zillow, Realtor.com, every brokerage site, every aggregator, and they live on the internet for years. The legal protections that exist around your privacy in your home — right of publicity laws, common-law privacy torts, address confidentiality programs for people in protective custody — don't prevent the photos from being taken. They only give you recourse after harm has happened.

Before your photographer arrives:
Walk every room. Sit at every angle the photographer will sit at. Look at what's visible.

Take down: family photos with faces, mail with names, kids' artwork with their names, calendars, ID documents, medication, items with school logos or team affiliations, religious symbols if you'd rather not advertise them, anything that identifies you specifically rather than identifying the home.

Move out of frame: backpacks with names, framed certificates and diplomas, items with company logos, vehicles where the license plate is visible.

When the photos are done, look at them before they go to the MLS. Ask whether you'd be comfortable with the worst person you've ever known seeing them.

Your house is for sale. Your family isn't.

I want to sincerely thank the Wichita Wildlight Photographic Society for inviting me to speak on the topic of Turning Photography Into a Business.

It was a privilege to spend time with a group so clearly committed to supporting photographers, encouraging growth, and helping develop skills across all experience levels and ages. The attention, engagement, and thoughtful discussions throughout the presentation spoke volumes about the culture this organization has built.

Photography communities like this matter. They help inspire creativity, sharpen technical ability, and remind photographers they don’t have to navigate the industry alone.

I truly appreciate the warm welcome and the opportunity to share some of my experiences from both the creative and business side of photography. Thank you again for having me.
