Welcome to the flock sweet Kora 🐓✨
Five years ago I sat in the grass of a local park with Kayla after taking a few photos of Blake for his first birthday, our first time really reconnecting since growing up together in school. We got right to the thick of life in discussion like no time had passed since seventh grade; I think even a few tears were shed. She let me into her world of motherhood, the highs and lows, and I did my best to just listen but probably offered more thoughts and advice than a more humble listener would’ve. More importantly, I tried to see her where she was at and meet her there. I tried to let our time together be less about the photos and more about what milestone the photos were celebrating - her surviving the experience that is surrendering yourself to motherhood in the most glorious, humbling, painful, and beautiful ways possible for a little boy she would go to the ends of the world to protect.
I’ve gotten to see her grow + heal in ways neither one of us could’ve imagined. I’ve sat in the grass with her and the kids year after year as her and Kevin bring more bundles of love and big personalities into the world. Something about Kayla gets softer yet fiercer with each child she has, like she feels more at home in the world every time she meets another piece of herself here that she was always meant to nurture and protect. She gives her kids the freedom to explore, get dirty, and let their imaginations and personalities run wild, while also making sure they are kind + loving all the same.
This is what it’s all about for me. Not just documenting your story, but being as much a part of it as you’ll allow me to be. The heart-grabbing photos that will bring you back to the good old days are often found on the inside of an intimate conversation on a summer evening while sitting in the grass.
(Also - happy birthday Kayla. You are so loved and we already know this will be your best decade yet.)
