Notes about using photographs for reference art and AI🤖
Every photographer is different on their policies, but I am pretty open about it. If ever in doubt, just ask about your specific case! I have some artists I have previously granted full allowances to use my images as references for art, such as Madys Pony Portraits . I am honored clients love their photos so much they want them recreated in other ways via digital art, physical art, or otherwise!
A few things to note are that my flexible stance only applies to non-commercial use. This means that if you intend to resell my photographs or derivatives of my photographs, you will need to contact me about commercial licensing.
A real world example is if you want to use images for your own personal calendar, that’s fine. If you want to start mass producing a calendar and selling it, you need to discuss commercial licensing with me. Most of the time, things are on a small enough scale I do not consider it commercial, but that’s why discussing individual circumstances are important.
If you intend to print images, make sure you have purchased High Resolution files that include printing rights. You also must get written consent to take my images to another retoucher or to be edited in any was as I offer basically every type of retouching myself and want to help as much as possible first. Altering images without consent is a copyright violation.
Another note is that I do not support the use of my images with AI. I can’t realistically stop clients, but I have since added an AI clause to my contract this year. I don’t really mind a fun edit here and there, like “make my horse and me into a cartoon”, but if you’re using AI to make a terrible version of something either I or another talented artist can physically do, please support us creators instead.
Anyway, thank you Mady’s Pony Portraits for these cute art drawings of Rudy after seeing my posts commemorating him! For any questions or clarifications, don’t hesitate to reach out!🥰
