The transformation of these Poconos and Catskills resorts is like looking through some sort of dystopian View-Master.

“Capturing experiences through photos, the team found, far from compromising people’s enjoyment of those experiences, actually seemed to amplify that enjoyment. A photographic mindset doesn’t seem to prevent people from “living in the moment,” as the old accusation goes; it might actually help them to do that living. What we find is you actually look at the world slightly differently, because you’re looking for things you want to capture, that you may want to hang onto,” Diehl explained of the study’s results. “That gets people more engaged in the experience, and they tend to enjoy it more.

A new study finds that documenting experiences, far from detracting from them, makes them even more enjoyable.

That is a transformation so profound and complex that when another young black child, Jacob Philadelphia, visited the White House in 2009 and asked the then-new president if they have the same hair. Obama bent down and advised Jacob to find out. The answer -- yes -- said much more to Jacob, the millions of Americans who have seen the Souza photo of that moment since. It said, I am like you. You are like me. The most powerful elected office in the world is mine and is truly possible for all of us. Obama reportedly gave the photo a permanent and special home in the White House.

A must-see photo.

In Sandberg’s portrait, she sits comfortably with one leg crossed and folded under the other in her chair. "It was interesting about Sheryl Sandberg because she is helping women come along, and she's not that different from me in that respect," said Leibovitz, fondly. "Her face has a whole new kind of resonance. … I don’t know too many CEOs of a company who come in and just sit like that in a chair."

“She was an artist who shined,” they said. “She was fighting to give life to those forgotten by society, to homeless people, to migrants, deploying one weapon: photography.”

Ms. Alaoui, a French-Moroccan whose photographs chronicled the themes of migration and cultural identity, was injured during the assault in the capital, Ouagadougou.

The camera is an instrument of transformation. It can make what it sees more beautiful, more gruesome, milder, darker, all the while insisting on the plain reality of its depiction. This is what Brecht meant in 1931 when he wrote, ‘‘The camera is just as capable of lying as the typewriter.’’ What then are we to do with this devious tool?

The apparent impartiality of photographs can conceal as much as it reveals — especially when the subject is violence or prejudice.
