I've known photographer Philin Phlash for more than 35 years. We first crossed paths around 1990 when I was interning at Metro Magazine, run by former Pl***oy photographer Stan Malinowski. Phil was one of the photographers whose work appeared in the magazine, and I remember being struck by his unforgettable personality.
Phil made his mark documenting Boston's punk rock and underground music scene in the late 1970s and 1980s. His raw, intimate black and white photographs captured the energy, personalities and atmosphere of a remarkable era in music history.
Over the decades, we've crossed paths countless times throughout Chicago's art and photography community. Phil has always been a familiar face at my exhibitions and gatherings, often with his camera in hand.
It was great catching up with him this past weekend at the Chicago Art Fair at the Merchandise Mart and seeing his photographs on display. He had already sold a couple of pieces when I stopped by, and there was interest in more.
Phil is truly one of a kind, both behind the camera and in person. I'm grateful that an unexpected encounter more than 35 years ago turned into a lasting friendship.
