The highest ranking listing showed real people doing real work.
You get a sense of who they are before you ever call.
That is the whole job of the profile.
Stock photos and empty rooms tell a searcher nothing.
Photos of the team tell them whether they want to spend an hour with you.

Simple, and almost nobody does it.

I found why this dentist outranks everyone nearby.

Their photos have people in them.
Not empty rooms. Not equipment. People doing the work.
Check the top results in almost any local category and the pattern holds.
The most reviewed, highest rated listings show humans.
People invest in people. The listing is the first impression.

It is the cheapest fix I find on most profiles.

The channel I would work first is the one most owners ignore.

Everyone does Maps and standard SEO. Fine, do those.
But AI leans hard on community forums.
It wants to see the owner actually demonstrating expertise in public.
Reddit is one of the strongest places for that.
Not posting links. Answering questions properly, where people are asking them.

That is the work I would do first if I were starting over.

Number one on Maps. Literally zero in Perplexity.

Standing in their lot, they rank number one on Google Maps. As they should.
Then search best auto body shop in Fort Myers in Perplexity.
They do not appear. Not lower down. Not at all.
Their map SEO is genuinely working.
The AI layer is not reading any of it.

That gap is the whole reason I keep making these.

Your clicks are falling. That is not what worries me.

Everyone's clicks are down. That part is universal.
The question is where they went.
They went to whoever the AI recommended.
Google matched on proximity and keyword. AI has memory and context about the person asking.
So it returns a better answer for them, and one business gets the introduction.

I stopped tracking the click and started tracking the recommendation.

I typed best med spa into AI and the list changed completely.

Same city. Same intent. Different engine.
The businesses AI returns are not the ones sitting at the top of Maps.
That is not a glitch. It is a different set of inputs.
Maps rewards proximity and reviews.
AI rewards the evidence that you are actually the right answer.

Two scoreboards. Most owners are only watching one.

I get asked whether AI search is worth caring about yet.

Ten links became three. Three became one.
That is the one answer economy.
Most owners do not feel it yet, because Maps and Search still carry them.
That cushion is what makes it dangerous.
By the time it hurts, the businesses in that spot have a two year head start.

I would rather build the head start than close the gap.

Your website is not doing what you think it is doing.

From what I see across the businesses I run, only a slice of a site ever gets cited.
People hear that and want to stop investing in it.
That is the wrong read.
It is still one of the most valuable assets you own.
The question is not whether to build it. It is which parts are doing the work.

I would build it differently, not less.

This one is number one on Maps and missing in AI.

Sweet Spot Medi Spa ranks number one from their own parking lot.
Great rating, strong photos, before and afters, replies on every review.
There is genuinely nothing to fix on the listing.
Then search best med spa in Fort Myers in AI and they are not first.
Maps and AI are two different scoreboards.

Winning one does not carry you on the other.

I let an agent build overnight and went to bed.

I was testing my own platform for building websites. Research heavy, very detailed builds.
I told it to run overnight and went to sleep.
Woke up to about $800 in API credits burned in roughly twelve hours.
That is about four months of a pro plan, gone in one night. And it never finished the project.
I rebuilt the whole thing after that. It now does the same job in fifty minutes.

Best lesson I have paid for. The failure is what forced the fix.
