Visited the Caldwell Woods for the first time, today. Not sure why it took me so long. It is a beautiful place with a bike trail and walking paths (unpaved) along the river. It was fun to explore with John Gaietto. We even found the remnants of an old bridge that dates back to the 1920s. After a little internet search, found out the bridge allowed golfers from the Bunker Hill Golf Club to cross the river to other sections of the course. The Golf Club closed in the 1950s. Can’t wait to see this place in the fall!

Headed to the lakefront this evening looking for some dramatic clouds. Ended up finding them in my own backyard. The last two days have been quite active. Even though I do enjoy a good storm, Chicago needs a little time to recover. Looks like we’ll be getting some relief this weekend.

With the hot and humid weather, going outdoors today did not sound appealing. So, it was decided that today we would check out the nearest vintage store. Riley, Sydney and I took the short walk to Vintage Design Mart after the storm was over. Walking around the two story store brought about many memories of my childhood, along with memories of my Mom. She would have loved this store. So, much to look at and displayed in a very creative way.

I was invited to check out two new exhibits at the Chicago Architecture Center that will be opening to the public on June 11th. Chicago’s Living Habitat, co-curated with Openlands and Fly Away City: Architecture for a Flourishing Ecosystem, co-curated with Studio Gang.

The two exhibitions address the intersection of urban design and natural environments. When first stepping into Chicago’s Living Habitat, visitors will learn about five distinct ecosystems in the Chicago region. By reading about these diverse environments the hope is that visitors will have a better understanding of the diversity and complexity of these areas and the need to protect them.

Fly Away City addresses the connection between architecture and nature. It depicts the negative interaction between these two and offers the changes being made to help protect the wildlife we share or space with and those that are just passing through. It was especially interesting to see the many options in window treatments for helping prevent the deadly bird strikes that plague our city.

There is no doubt that visitors will leave these two exhibits feeling inspired and encouraged by the steps being taken to preserve the nature that surrounds us everyday and offers us some peace and tranquillity in a world that at times seems chaotic and unpredictable.

On Monday, I walked up and down Michigan Avenue to check out the “Monuments of Stillness.” Ten sculptures by artist Carole Feuerman were installed on June 2nd.

I was only able to find eight sculptures and two looked identical to each other, but with different titles. Let me know if you find the other two!

If you think he or she looks rather prehistoric, you wouldn’t be wrong. Snapping Turtles have a lineage that dates back millions of years. These turtles can live 30 to 40 years in the wild. If you see one, don’t get too close. Snapping Turtles can be more aggressive on land than in the water. They would prefer to just swim away from you, but if approached on land they might bite.

The view of the Major League stadium as seen from the porch of the Field of Dreams farmhouse.

Took a day trip out to Dyersville to watch my nephews play baseball. Nice to be back in heaven or as others like to call it, Iowa. Last time we were there was back in 2022 when we were cheering on Noah and the Cubs RBI team.
