It was raining during the time we had allotted for Katie & Hugh’s portrait session, so we snuck inside the stable—a fitting Plan B, as the wedding took place at the bride’s family’s horse farm and there were nods to equestrianism throughout the decor (see slide 3).

The results were some of the most unique wedding portraits we’ve taken to date, proof that sometimes, the adaptation is even better than the original idea.

We’d forgive you for thinking dinner service and speeches are a slower time for photos. In reality, though, they are timeline moments when we really lock in—because, almost always, speeches deliver some of the most genuine emotions of the day. Newlyweds doubled over laughing, tears of pride in parents’ eyes, shock or surprise from friends and family, utter joy all around.

While you can pose and rearrange portraits until they’re perfect, speeches are come-as-you-are: real, honest, raw feelings, captured to last.
