I was asked several weeks ago to photograph a client's architectural lighting at the Old Post Office in Chicago. This project was a real pleasure and a significant change from my usual projects. Kellogg School of Management’s new Global Hub building on campus of Northwestern University.
This is a beautiful new building located next to Lake Michigan on the campus of Northwestern University. The 410,000-square-foot lakefront education center was designed by KPMB Architects of Toronto, Canada. Kellogg School of Management describes the function of this new addition as follows: “to encourage collaboration by pulling students and faculty out of traditional silos, the building is filled with open and inviting communal spaces that enable dialogue and debate, spontaneous idea sharing and inspired problem solving”.
The photographs were captured on January 7, 2017 throughout the day. I arrived before sunrise with -2F and believe the high temperature that day reached 15F with chill factors skirting 0 – 10 below. Yeah…a tough project. My Iphone’s Health app recorded 5.5 miles walked throughout the day while carrying about 30 lbs of equipment. Shooting in cold temperature presented some technical problems like sticky tripod gears, and working the camera without the benefit of gloves. The extreme cold also allowed the pressure-fit feet on my tripod to contract and fall out….somewhere.
Despite the logistical challenges, the overall design and architectural details of this building photographed beautifully. Like I always say… It really isn’t work if you love what you’re doing”.

Some great news from one of my long-time clients Architectural Gardens. Two of their projects have won coveted Gold Awards from the 2016 Annual Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA). The owner Margaret Morrisette, is a true master of design and her company is to be congratulated for two gold awards in one year. Here are some of the photos from those two projects.
