***TODAY*** Chicago Fire Department Working Fire - 3021 East 79th Street

At 08:38 this morning, Engine Company 126 arrived at the above address and confirmed they had a working fire. The building was 20x70, vacant, lightweight construction with an origin location that looked to be on the first floor. There is just no way to get to that side of town quickly, even on a Sunday morning. It looked as though they had fire blowing out two windows on the “B” side with extension to the second floor but it was pretty much done before I could get on scene. I’ll be out there again next weekend but for now, here’s a few from this morning. Engine 126 is in the spare.

***TONIGHT*** Stickney Fire Department Box Alarm - 3900 South Laramie Avenue

At about 1820 hours, a chemical tank at Koppers Chemical exploded, sending thick, acrid smoke across the southwest side. Two ariels were used to extinguish the tank. A HAZMAT box and foam task force were ordered up but I didn’t stay long enough to see if it was put to use. Photos from the scene below.

***YESTERDAY*** Chicago Fire Department Working Fire

There was a brief south side fire yesterday afternoon that was declared out in six minutes. It was a nice day so I continued into the scene for a few images. Have to stay sharp in these slower summer months. So here is a quick shout out to the men and women of Engine Company 73 and Truck Company 50.

***TODAY*** Chicago Fire Department 2-11 Alarm - 6742 South Crandon Avenue

At 0421 hours, a still and box response was given for the report of two people trapped in the rear of the second floor. Engine Company 63 landed moments later to find heavy fire blowing out side A from the second floor. Quick action was taken and two grabs were made from the second floor, both transported in critical condition. A 2-11 and a Mayday response was called for when a firefighter briefly went missing. The Mayday was secured quickly after that member was found. Minimal photos were available early on due to low visibility.

***YESTERDAY*** Chicago Fire Department 2-11 Part II

This was quite an interesting incident from the get go. You can see how it all started in the first image. Engine 109 grabbed a hydrant right at the entrance and it really didn’t look like much. But then things took off. This yard was 300 x 1000 at there were spot fires that kept popping up everywhere. 100’s of feet of hose had to be stretched from 109, 65, and 99 with 23 feeding Tower Ladder 39. At one point, bags of mulch along an out building took off, leading to some extension. Both 6-8-8 and Engine Company 2 responded and were put to work. The steam for Engine 2 easily penetrated the piles of mulch, making it much easier to extinguish without pulling it apart with a front end loader. Sadly, there was no way to get a clear look at the unicorn at work. With the winds working against them, companies on scene did an incredible job getting ahead of this. Especially with minimal manpower early on. There was only one engine company on scene for quite a while as they were the only one dispatched. Their officer asked for a second engine almost immediately.

***TODAY*** Chicago Fire Department 2-11 Alarm - 3154 South California Avenue

Engine Company 109 was dispatched to a rubbish fire at a mulch facility just before 1600 hrs. As they were set up to extinguish some pallets that were burning along the roadside, this mess lit up 400 feet to the west, driven by gusty winds. I’ll have more on this tomorrow.
