A pleasure today shooting with model Hannah Clarke who makes it look easy. This was a great opportunity to put the Fuji GFX 100S Il through its paces that I got to try on loan, courtesy of Fujifilm US. 📸:Me

This is possibly one of my favorite images that I captured during a recent trip to Sweden, it is the Kastellet Stockholm, an old fort in the Stockholm archipelago. I am drawn to it because it was a miracle I even got it in less than ideal conditions for photography.

The fort itself was severely backlit leaving most of the scene in shadow. This also had to be shot from a moving boat that I had no control over, so tripods, long exposures, etc. were not an option. The moving boat also meant I had just a few tries to get my shot as the composition kept changing as the boat continued forward which also ruled out doing a continuous bracketed exposure. In the end a single shot won the day and the incredible dynamic range of the Sony A7C II saved the day by allowing me to recover the shadows successfully in post. There is no AI trickery, not even a sky replacement. This is as shot with standard cleanup, color, and toning adjustments applied to achieve the final effect.

I found myself desperately needing to get to a higher vantage point to capture some of the shots I wanted to get today. I figured out a good spot and was met by the following mountain of stairs to get there.

If you zoom in closely you’ll see there is actually a woman stopped at the very top after climbing them and likely evaluating her life choices 🤣. It was worth it, a quick iPhone shot to prove what I was hoping to get looking down toward Gamla Stan.

I was asked the other day, why I sometimes make a distinction between “taking pictures” and “making photographs” and for me it is about creative or artistic intent which is demonstrated in this example.

Not everything needs to be a photograph but there are plenty of scenes and subjects that can benefit from the extra time and attention to detail.

Good dinner and drinks with this great group of photographers. The best part of attending Imaging USA is that there is rarely ever image processing to do or deadlines to meet, everyone can finally relax and in this town, enjoy a wee bit of bourbon 🥃.

Congratulations to Lainey Wilson on her win for Entertainer of the Year last night at the CMA's! I had the pleasure of shooting her performance in Indianapolis earlier this year when I got to see all the talent and energy first hand. A well deserved honor!

My first piece of advice to every new photographer above all is to become comfortable with and learn how to be critical of your own work, even as a beginner. This can be easy to ignore when getting caught up in the excitement of creating images.

It’s impossible to be unbiased but it is still important to identify flaws in an image or parts of an image that could have been better executed. No photographer captures a perfect image with every click of the shutter. It might feel a little defeating at first, but this is not about negativity. Instead, this is about identifying which areas of technical knowledge or technique can be focused on and improved during the next shoot. This can allow skills to develop at a much faster rate compared to convincing ourselves that every shot looks “pretty good.” Never feel defeated, we all started there at one time and continue this growth with every photo we take.

An old image in my catalog from 2019 that I was previously unhappy with, but applying my 2023 processing workflows to a 2019 image gave it a whole new life.

Great story and reminds me a lot of the thoughts I had during my switch from Nikon to Sony a few years ago. Each of the major brands have some amazing cameras and lenses today, it’s not just about the gear anymore.

When pro photographer Ryan Ditch made the switch to Sony, it wasn’t just for the cameras and lenses. The community was the X factor.

Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦 to our Northern neighbors! This seemed like a good time to revisit an image I captured in 2019 during a trip to Banff where incredible landscapes are in abundant supply throughout the Canadian Rockies. It might be time to visit again!
