Over 15 years ago, when I first started photographing weddings, I noticed the photographers I worked for paying more attention to their equipment than to the people on the other side of the camera. I swore to myself that I would get so comfortable using this gear that I could adjust the myriad of settings - shutter speeds & F stops, ISO & OCF - without thinking much about it in order to free up my mind to **engage** with the humans on the other side... Major props to our member, Vanessa, for encapsulating that promise made so many years ago...

Throwing it back on a Friday to Emily & Sam's wedding day because it's up on the blog this week! (And this might be one of my favorite images of 2020. I adore the gesture of Sam's hand throwing the umbrella and the sweet moment between these two at the same time. Plus, what's more 2020 than a car parade in the background?!)

You know what happens when it rains on your wedding day? You get fantastic sunsets.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌅⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without the clouds in the sky (and the water in the clouds) there's nothing to reflect the sunlight. But with the clouds, light hits water and that special combo treats us all to a beautiful range of colors. I didn't mean to end with a metaphor for when I started writing this. I really just wanted to calm everyone's nerves about rain, but it's a pretty good metaphor isn't it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷🏻‍♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Congratulations & . Not only on your lovely wedding day, but for always playing life by your own terms. Here's to many more years of embracing the rain.

April 18th became November 6th. November 6th became June 25, 2021. And while will no doubt party their butts off next summer, they decided to stop letting COVID dictate their plans and eloped last week. Through it all, this gorgeous woman right here has been poised and genuinely relaxed. Changing plans seemed to hardly phase her. she's rolled with the punches and stayed true to herself along the journey. strutted her gorgeous looking self right up to her husband looking every bit the chic, confident and empowered woman I've learned her to be. May we all learn to take charge of our lives with as much grace as Regina has brought to the nonsense that has been 2020. Jumpsuit by // Painting by .paints // Makeup by // Hair by

Our team at Gold Grid Studios created this print shop, where all proceeds of these original photographs go to support BLM organizations - I Grow Chicago and My Block, My Hood, My City. If you haven't checked it out yet, I hope you have a chance! We've already raised over $300 for these organizations as you've seen in my InstaStories, and it would be wonderful to keep it up!

Here is what I know to be necessary - my work to be an actual for the black community must become a part of my day-to-day experience. Over the last week and a half I have doubled down on research and education. I’ve revamped this quarter’s booklist with more pages than I’ll ever be able to finish in 3 months. I know I must do the work, and quite frankly, my zest to dive in this last week I’m sure has some roots of guilt. But what I’ve also learned in this last week and a half is that the work to actively be anti-racist is HARD work. It is LIFETIME work. It’s not going to be finished after I read all the books on my list. So I have to find solutions to stay in for the long game. To not get burnt out and most of all, to show up for my black friends, because if I’m tired after barely 2 weeks, imagine what 24/7/365 must feel like...
🖤
So while this caption may sound like a strange introduction in sharing one of my favorite detail, yet moment-driven, images from & wedding day 5 years ago, my hope and my guess is that sharing in my own education couldn’t be more suitable for the anniversary of a bride that teaches... May this mark the beginning of my life's work not only being seen in photos but being seen in how I show up and do the work of bettering life for the black community.

Can you spot the redhead? There... In the middle of the dance floor. Seamlessly blending in with all of your friends, not even phased by the fact the hora is about to descend upon her - can you see me in there?
💃🏽
I'm sharing this moment from Sammi & Don's wedding tonight because in a rather cluttered and totally unscripted way, it showcases so much of what events mean to me - being a part of your community, celebrating the two of you, supporting you, and freezing your priceless memories in photographs.
❤️
I've worked nearly every Saturday of every summer for the last 10 years because I believe in the power of community. I believe in the once-in-a-lifetime feeling 2 people can share seeing the tangible representation of their support networks, united together to celebrate their lives joining. I've been honored to spend my weekends being welcomed into lifelong friend groups and intimate, emotional family moments. 10 years ago, my only explanation for why I was drawn to weddings was my extroverted tendency to enjoy being around people. Now, I realize it goes so much deeper - direct to my core value. Community matters. Tangibly seeing and feeling the support of your community matters.
🤗
It may be a luxury to throw a party for 200 people, but I think the NEED as humans to spend time together with our communities has become apparent now more than ever before. And this need is what so many of us in the have known all along. But here's the catch - Many of the hardworking people and companies that you’ve counted on to bring your meaningful events to life are in crises. Moments that we all live to celebrate, and that currently so many people are looking forward to having in the future, might not have the professionals they need to create them. If we do not get aid, many of these beloved will cease to exist. We are calling on our elected officials to see the and .
