Last little batch of bird photos before we head to Chicago for the rest of summer.

For many years now I have driven past San Simon, AZ on I-10 and seen the abject decay of the homes and businesses there. Recently I made time to take Exit 382 and explore. Few places have struck me as so sad, yet according to US Census Bureau figures the Cochise county town still has 270 residents, of which I might have seen 6-7.

Having viewed them from the highway many times, the prized ruins I wanted to photograph are those of an old park with dilapidated swings, teeter totters and other kids rides along with rusting canopy structures and picnic tables. Alas when I finally was able to find the road into that area I was disappointed with a tall chain-link fence with a locked gate blocking my access.

However, the town still had many old buildings and vehicles to tickle my "rusty stuff" fancy. I might return for more some day, but I didn't feel at ease poking around the many single wide trailers and junk accumulations as a good number remain inhabited and I just felt like my invasive camera wasn't that welcome. I follow my gut in these situations and mainly stuck to the main roads through town to play it safe.

I felt privileged to have been allowed to photograph this old cowboy outside an El Paso tienda. When I see interesting looking people I ask if I may take their photo. 9 of 10 times they say yes. I truly treasure these brief interactions and capturing a moment in time.

The cacti are blooming and that means the birds are chowing down on cactus fruit and flowers here in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. I had a blast photographing a big variety of feathered friends earlier this week.
