Chicago Son, Westside Raised

Gary smiles all the time. Even as a kid, he was always wearing that smile.

So, as we were trying to capture this particular shot, his wife, Anne, had to remind him that we were going for a serious expression.

Finally, Gary’s expression changed—and this is the moment we captured.

When I asked him what brought on the seriousness, he said he was thinking about the tragic events happening in Mississippi.

That was more than enough to put Gary in a serious mood.

Sometimes, a photograph captures more than a face. It captures a moment, a memory, and everything that was on someone’s mind when the shutter clicked.

Clowning around with my lil photographer (my granddaughter)! Took her a few tries to capture with my entire head in frame. 😂 Not bad for a four year old and her first try at it!
