A Portrait of Dad

As Father's Day approaches, I've been thinking about the photographs that matter most.

Not the ones we take for social media.

Not the ones that live on our phones for a few weeks before being forgotten.

The ones that become part of a family's story.

The portrait that hangs on the wall.

The photograph grandchildren point to years from now.

The image that quietly grows more valuable with time.

This year, I am opening one Father's Day Portrait Commission at The Davissa Ranch.

This will be an unhurried sunset portrait experience designed to honor a father, grandfather, or the man whose presence has helped shape a family.

The commission will include:

• A sunset portrait session at The Davissa Ranch
• Father, grandfather, or up to three generations welcome
• One finished, professionally printed portrait
• A curated collection of digital images

Only one commission will be accepted.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand more clearly why photography has always mattered so deeply to me.

For many people, a photograph is simply an image.
But for me, it has always been something far more important.

My years in funeral service taught me something that never left me:
eventually photographs become sacred objects.

Long after voices grow quiet and seasons of life have passed, people reach for photographs to remember. To reconnect. To hold onto moments, people and emotions that time has moved farther away.

That understanding shaped not only my life, but the heart behind my work at Davissa Photography, and as a photographic artist.

Over the years, I have photographed weddings, families, ranch life, old horses, quiet moments and difficult seasons. Some joyful. Some heavy. But always real. Because I have never believed photography was simply about trends, perfection or performance.

I believe photography should preserve truth with dignity.

This image of my Mother remains one of the most meaningful photographs I have ever created. Not because of technical perfection, but because it quietly preserves a moment in time that can never exist again. A season of life. A memory. A presence.

Today, I find myself thinking about remembrance. About how quickly life moves. About the people we miss, the moments we carry with us, and the quiet responsibility photographs have to help preserve those things with honesty and grace.

As I grow older, I also find myself drawn more deeply toward the quieter and more reflective side of photography and artistic storytelling. In the days ahead, I hope to share more of that journey and philosophy through my photographic art page as well.

Because in the end, I believe the deeper purpose of photography is not simply to create beautiful images, but to remind us that these lives, these moments and these people mattered.

Thank you to all who have trusted us over the years to help preserve pieces of your lives and stories. It is a responsibility I have never taken lightly.

Hello, Cheyenne.

It has been a little while since we’ve properly introduced ourselves here, and with so many new faces in our community these days, we thought perhaps it was time.

We’re David and Melissa Wilson, the husband-and-wife team behind Davissa Photography.

Together, we’ve spent more than 25 years documenting people, businesses, weddings, families, and moments that matter. Over the years, photography has taken us across the country and allowed us to be part of more than 750 weddings, countless portraits, commercial campaigns, and stories we will never forget.

But beyond photography, we’re simply people who love meaningful conversation, quiet mornings, old western values, good coffee, honest work, and life lived with intention.

When we’re not behind the camera, much of our life is centered around our ranch and the horses at The Davissa Horse Refuge, where displaced and retired working horses are given a permanent home and care for the rest of their lives.

Photography has never simply been about “taking pictures” for us.

It has always been about people.
Connection.
Trust.

And preserving the moments that quietly become part of a life story.

These days, we continue to work with established businesses, portrait clients, and a small number of select wedding couples each year who connect with the kind of timeless, story-driven imagery we love to create.

We recently had the opportunity to work with Stan and Maggie Hartzheim and the team at Double H Mortgage here in Cheyenne to create a new series of professional brand and team images for their company.

One of the things we value most in commercial photography is the opportunity to help established businesses present themselves with authenticity, professionalism, and confidence. In industries built on trust and relationships, strong visual presence matters and Double H Mortgage reflects that exceptionally well.

Stan and Maggie have built a respected company rooted in service, community connection, and genuine care for the people they work with every day. Their involvement with programs such as Homes for Heroes supporting veterans, first responders, educators, healthcare workers, and other community heroes speaks clearly to the kind of business and leadership they have worked hard to build.

Some seasons of life deserve more than hurried photographs.

They deserve time.
Presence.
Connection.
Room to simply be together.

In the weeks leading up to Father’s Day, Davissa Photography will be opening a very limited number of portrait commissions centered around family, connection, and meaningful portraiture. These commissions will be at The Davissa Ranch.

These sessions are intentionally approached without rush or rigid structure. The goal is not simply to create photographs, but to create space for genuine interaction and honest moments to unfold naturally. Images that feel timeless, grounded, and true to the people within them.

Only two portrait commissions will be accepted each Sunday:
one daytime commission and one sunset commission.

The daytime sessions will lean quieter and more documentary in feel. Natural interaction, open spaces, warmth, and simplicity.

The sunset sessions will carry a more cinematic and atmospheric tone, using the final light of the day to create imagery filled with depth, emotion, and connection.

These portrait commissions are intended for those who value meaningful imagery and wish to preserve a season of life thoughtfully and intentionally.

Anna and Scott’s wedding day was filled with so many of the things that matter most… joy, tenderness, laughter, quiet moments, and the unmistakable feeling of two people who genuinely love one another.

From the very beginning of the day to the final moments of the evening, it was a privilege to witness and preserve such a meaningful celebration surrounded by family and friends who care for them so deeply.

This afternoon, we have the honor of documenting the wedding of Anna and Scott as they begin this next chapter of life together.

To be trusted with something this meaningful is never something we take lightly. Weddings are more than schedules, details, and photographs. They are the gathering of families, the quiet emotions, the anticipation, the laughter, the tears, and the moments that will matter for generations to come.

Over the past months, we have quietly filled the remaining wedding dates on our 2026 calendar.

To every couple who has reached out, trusted us, and invited us into such meaningful moments in your lives, thank you. It means more to us than we could ever properly put into words.

As we begin looking ahead, we have a very small number of wedding dates still open for 2027.

We have always believed wedding photography should feel personal and intentional. Because of that, we photograph only a limited number of weddings each year, allowing us to give each couple the care, attention, and presence their story deserves.
