For years now, whenever a horse (it's usually a stallion) goes down for a roll I focus the lens on their head. Often as not, the result is something at least interesting or, in this case, terrifying lol.

"Flowers in Her Hair"
Unforgettable (Mare), late of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Virginia. After a healthy roll to scratch she came up perfectly accessorized.

For the 3+ days I spent at McCullough Peaks Wild Horses every time these two saw each other it was on. Ponca, the black, seemed to get the better of it but the other (whose name I don't know) kept coming back for more. Plus, they were both vocal and the sound carried there on the open plains.

"Daddy's Little Girl"
Love him or hate him, I always saw Riptide (2009-Stallion) out there being a gentle, nurturing and protective sire. In a past season this filly rarely left his side and when she did Rip would be looking for her. I've always loved pic 3 with them looking at each other. "Convergence"
McCullough Peaks Wild Horses Wyoming - 9/25/2025 - 08:00am
Two bands merging to a common trail for morning grazing. The black stallion at bottom with burrs in his mane is Ponca and leading the upper band at far right is a stallion I was told is called Hardin (if I heard correctly). A beautiful, cloudless morning.

A little homage to one of my favorites. Little Dolphin, better known as Neptune (2008-Stallion)
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia. Small in stature but with an outsized personality, I called him "The Wild Card" because, as evidenced by this shot, you never knew what he would do when meeting him in the northern part of the refuge. He was retired from the refuge and lived out the rest of his life on the Skydog Sanctuary in Oregon no doubt making his presence known.

"The Black Stallion"
Ace (2007) Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia.
A favorite among avid pony watchers, Ace has sired many foals over the years and still going strong in the northern herd. Generally pretty easy going but, like all stallions can get his back up in a heartbeat when protecting his band. These were taken from the bow of a boat I was on a month before moving to Wyoming in 2024.

"Happy Hour" Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Other than rain, there is no naturally occurring fresh water on the refuge so the herd drinks brackish water. In times of extreme drought, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co. , the entity that owns the herd, will fill water tanks in the north end of the refuge & run a fire hose from the southern pen to this watering hole.

Riptide (2009-Stallion) Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, VA. I first saw Rip at the 2016 Spring Roundup and #1 is the first ever pic I took of him. For 9 years he provided countless moments on the refuge seeing him as a dominant stallion, a gentle sire and fierce protector of his mares & offspring Thanks, big boy!

"Wild & Free"
After winning a stallion fight Ponca ran past to claim the mare he's looking at in the 2nd pic. For me there's nothing better than observing their natural behaviors & interactions
