Happy first day of school to all who celebrate!

I cannot believe my baby is entering her last year of elementary school. June is SO excited about fifth grade and ready to rule the school (she will be a kind and benevolent ruler, of course).

Meanwhile, we are smack dab in the middle of the middle school years over here, with all the ups and downs that come along with it. And unlike his sister, Walt was not about to let me do a back-to-school photo shoot with him and his besties.

Wishing my two kiddos, their besties, and ALL the kiddos a fantastic year of learning and growth! 📚✏️

As families are planning fall sessions, I want to highlight some of my very favorite locations for fall photos. Next up: Queeny Park.

When I first started taking photos "for real" (not just ones where I chased my own kiddos around), I would leave a session and sit in my car thumbing through the tiny images on my camera's screen with a mix of excitement to see what we'd captured and terror that I hadn't caught anything good.

I remember thinking that if I didn't leave a session this excited about what we'd created, it would be time to stop this extra gig of mine.

Well, nearly six years later, and I'm still just as excited to see what we create in each and every session. Though I usually make it home before I upload and check images rather than peeping at the LCD screen, I'm still just as pumped to see what we capture.

Last week at Klondike Park I got to guide a family in play and connection and togetherness. That's exactly why I'm here - that's the magic that keeps me coming back.

Still excited. Still here.

21 years in the classroom means I've spent two decades getting to know high schoolers - how they think, what makes them laugh, what actually helps them relax (spoiler: it's not "just be natural!").

Senior sessions are genuinely one of my favorite things, and I think it shows. These images? That ease, that realness, that actual smile - that comes from someone who knows exactly how to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. We talk, we laugh, I ask weird questions, and somewhere in there the posing stops feeling like posing.

I just love this spot's tall oaks, stone steps, and golden hour magic. (And the fact that I got married at the sunken garden here many, many moons ago gives this one a special spot in my heart.)

I've been dreaming about this for a while now. A "belly out" maternity session where mama feels completely comfortable celebrating her bump in all its glory. And this mama? She absolutely understood the assignment–so gorgeous, so confident, so real.

There's something about capturing pregnancy without apology that just hits different. The way light plays on skin. The strength and softness all at once. These images remind me why I fell in love with maternity photography in the first place.

I cannot wait to do more of this. If you're expecting and you want to show up for your belly the way it deserves–curves, glow, and all–let's make it happen. This is what maternity sessions should look like.

Here's something I get asked about all the time, so let me just put this out there: Do you capture individual shots of the kids? What about those everyone-looking-at-the-camera family photos?

Here's the honest truth: I will capture individual shots of your kiddos looking at the camera. I'll get those smiley-at-me moments because, let's be real, grandma needs those framed on her mantle.

But I'm also going to sneak in plenty of snuggly, candid images - the ones where everyone's just... existing together. Those are the ones that make my heart happy.

So yes, expect it all: solo shots, family portraits where everyone's actually looking, and the in-between magic. You won't have to choose.

Fall booking just opened–and honestly, timing matters more than you might think.

If you've spent any time in St. Louis, you know our fall is basically three different seasons mashed into three months. September feels like summer's longer cousin. October swings wildly - 80° one week, 50° the next. November? That's basically winter.

Which means your wardrobe changes. Your surroundings change. Everything changes.

Here's my take (and what I booked for my own family for our photos): September wins. It’s warm enough for me (I’m a baby about the cold) but not so warm that it triggers my husband’s sweaty back (gross, but true) I know, I know, fall colors are the thing, but I'm team September because I actually don't love how prominent golden/rust tones read in photos. To me they feel too autumnal, and if I'm printing these for our home year-round, I want something that doesn't scream "October."

But here's the beautiful part: you do you. Love the leaves? Book October and own it. Run cold like I do? September's your month. Want cozy, layered, wrapped-up vibes? November is made for you.

Your photos should feel like your family, not like you're checking a seasonal box.
