**August 4th - Birth story**

It started quietly.

Contractions began, but she wasn’t sure if they were *real* labor yet. They stayed with her throughout the day….some stronger than others, some requiring her to stop and breathe through them. Some easy to ignore.

She started timing them.

8–10 minutes apart.

Maybe this really was labor.

She checked in with Gentle Mama Holistic Midwifery , and over the next few hours, the contractions began to change. They were coming closer together, lasting 30–45 seconds at a time and harder to ignore.
Her husband, Jake, was still at work, so he was called home.

Six minutes apart now.

Thirty seconds.
Forty-five seconds.
Sometimes a full minute.

Jake got home, and there was an exhale.

*Okay. He’s here. I can relax.* this really IS labor. She called the team to come over.

The contractions were getting stronger. Harder to manage. There was no mistaking it now. This was it.

Then I got the text as I was heading to the birth. “My water broke”. And it was ON.

When I arrived, she was already in the pool, deep in laborland and working hard.

Rocking. Breathing. Moving through each contraction.

Jake was right beside her.

They worked together—her doing the incredible work of bringing their baby into the world, and him right there, steady and present, supporting her through every wave.

And then, after just a few powerful pushes, their baby was born.

And for a moment, everything else disappeared.

The hospital birth that had once felt so traumatic was now a distant memory.

This was different.

This was her body.
Her baby.
Her home.
Her birth.

And this time, she knew what it felt like to be held, supported, heard, and completely in her own power.

I’m a little late to World Breastfeeding Week.

But like all Michigan birth workers, I was busy doing the work I love most—photographing births, witnessing new families meet their babies, and watching mothers begin this incredible, complicated, beautiful journey. All the babies wanted to come in early Aubust.

So maybe this week is actually the perfect time to share these.

I had the incredible honor of being part of the **Rose Breastfeeding Project**, photographing mothers and their babies in the quiet, ordinary, extraordinary moments of breastfeeding. https://www.facebook.com/BreastfeedingRose

These photographs are about more than feeding.

They are about connection between mothers, families, babies.
The soft little hands reaching for their mothers.
The way a baby settles into a body they already know.
The ages and stages of breastfeeding.

Nursing doesn't look the same for everyone. Every journey is different. And every mother/parent deserves support without judgment—whether her breastfeeding journey lasts days, months, years, or doesn't happen at all.

But I will always believe these moments are worthy of being seen.

I am so grateful I got to photograph them.

A little late.
Still very much worth celebrating. 🤍

Before the birth story, there is the becoming. From the first pregnancy test with that faint positive line… to the first ultrasound, first kicks, baby shower, and everything in between, you change.
Pregnancy isn’t just waiting for your baby to arrive. It’s a season of transformation that changes you into who you need to be, before your baby arrives.
It’s a beautiful journey and it’s worth documenting.

Before there was a birth story, there was this.

Sunlight warming your skin on a late summer day.
Bare feet in the grass.
A hand resting on the curve of a growing belly.
Hugs and love from the kids who are also anxiously waiting.

The quiet anticipation of labor...which happened to start shortly after these photos.

And a reminder of the season when two hearts shared one body, and a mother carried the whole world beneath her skin.

The first breath.
The first cry.
The first time your eyes meet.

It happens in an instant, yet it divides your life into a before and an after.
