The light changes this week.

It happens every year around the end of August and it is genuinely noticeable if you're outside at five o'clock. The sun drops lower, the color warms, and the harsh overhead quality of July disappears. Photographers wait all year for it.

That's the whole reason fall sessions exist here. Not the leaves β€” the light. The leaves are a bonus that arrives a few weeks later.

It lasts about six weeks and then New England takes it back.

Fall dates open Wednesday. The October 16–18 weekend goes first, every single year.

She was just born. And then she wasn't little any more.

The first year moves faster than any other year of their life, and it's the only one where the changes are visible month to month. What I photograph, and roughly when:

🍼 The Sitter, around six months. That wobbly, proud, deeply concentrated face only exists for a few weeks.

🧸 The Stander, nine or ten months. Pulling up on everything, curious about everything, still small enough to pick up with one arm.

πŸŽ‚ The First Birthday. A year of watching her grow, turned into something you can actually hold.

You don't have to do all three. But if you only do one β€” do the cake smash. It's the one where her whole personality shows up.

Weekday studio slots are open through the fall.

Fall dates open next week.

A few honest things before they do.

The October 16–18 weekend goes first. Every year, without fail, usually within days. If those dates matter to you, be ready.

September is underrated. Warmer light, calmer schedules, and the trees have started turning without everyone else having noticed yet. The families who book September are almost always the ones who have done this before.

These are full sessions, not minis. One hour, the whole family, outdoors β€” North Bridge, Acton Arboretum, Great Brook Farm.

New England gives us roughly six weeks of this and then takes it back. That's not marketing, it's just how the light works here.

Is it too late to book maternity portraits?

The sweet spot is 28 to 34 weeks. Far enough along that the bump is unmistakable, early enough that you're still comfortable standing for an hour.

If you're due in October, November, or December, you're in that window right now β€” or you're about to be.

After 36 weeks it gets harder. Not impossible, just harder, and the last thing I want is for you to spend the session counting the minutes until you can sit down.

Studio sessions run on weekdays year-round. Outdoor sessions start looking extraordinary once the foliage turns.

Message me your due date and I'll tell you the window that works.

A word for the mothers of senior boys.

He will say he doesn't care. He may say it more than once, possibly in the car on the way here.

Here is what actually happens. Nine times out of ten, about fifteen minutes in, he stops performing indifference and starts being eighteen β€” which is a very specific and very brief thing to be, and it photographs beautifully.

What helps: let him wear what he actually wears. Bring the thing he cares about, whether that's a bat, a guitar, a car he saved two summers for. Boys do far better with something in their hands than with instructions about where to put them.

And don't ask for a big smile. The half one is the real one. It's the expression his friends would recognize, and it's the one you'll want in ten years.

He will pretend not to like the photographs. He will also send one to someone.

Nobody books a session for the dog. They book it because they have started counting.

You notice it around year eight or nine. He takes the stairs slower. He sleeps in the sun a bit longer. And you realize every photograph you have of him is a phone snap taken from above, mid-yawn, in bad kitchen light.

That is not the face you would describe to someone. It is not the one you'd want on the wall in five years.

So what I photograph is the actual expression β€” the one you'd recognize from across a room. Ears up, eyes on you, the exact look he gives when you pick up the leash.

They are only really themselves for a little while.

What actually happens at a cake smash, for every parent who has asked.

We start clean. Her birthday outfit, no frosting, happy. These are usually the most beautiful photographs of the whole hour and almost nobody expects that.

Then the cake arrives.

Most babies touch it carefully at first. Then they look up at you to check whether this is genuinely allowed. Then β€” chaos. Frosting-covered, belly-laughing chaos, which is the part you came for.

Afterwards there is a warm little tub ready in the studio. Some babies love the tub. Some are appalled by it. Both make good pictures.

The whole thing takes about an hour, on a weekday, with the studio entirely yours and my full attention.

If there is a first birthday coming up this fall β€” book it before the birthday, not scrambling after it.

A studio pet session is a different animal than an outdoor one. 🐾

No wind, no squirrels, no distractions. Just controlled light, a clean backdrop, and your dog's actual face β€” the expression you'd recognize from across a room.

Weekday studio pet minis run all month. Quiet studio, relaxed dog, my full attention.

Message me "PAWS" and I'll send you the details and what's open.

How to plan a senior session so it actually looks like them.

Let them pick one outfit that is genuinely theirs. Not the one you would choose β€” the jacket they wear constantly, the shirt from the concert. The photographs where they look most like themselves are almost always the ones where they chose the clothes.

Bring one thing that means something. The instrument, the ball, the dog, the truck they saved for. It gives their hands something to do, and it dates the photograph in a way that matters later.

One location, done properly. I do not run anyone around town collecting backdrops. An hour in one good place beats forty minutes split across three, and nobody ends up tense in the car.

Book around their light, not your calendar. Late afternoon is worth rearranging a schedule for.

And let them be a little serious. Not every frame has to be a grin. The quiet ones tend to be the ones they keep.
