8.26.26 I love getting to see the hummingbirds appreciate the gardens at my house. This is a beautiful ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) enjoying some bean flowers and stocking up in preparation for a long journey later this fall.

7.29.26 This is a female yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus). While I have seen this species a few times now, I hadn’t managed to capture any good photos of them before so this was exciting! I wish I had seen some of the males up close to photograph as well because the yellow on their heads is much more vibrant.

7.29.26 Yet another lifer for me, this unique bird is a white-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi). You can’t really tell in this photo, but this species, similar to the glossy ibis, has iridescent feathers on the wings, which makes them particularly stunning in the right light.

7.29.26 I certainly had not expected to see any pelicans in Colorado so I was quite surprised when we ended up seeing about 30 of them at a wildlife area in Saguache, CO. These are American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) which I first saw on my trip to the coasts of Oregon and Washington last year.

7.23.26 It was incredible to see a herd of about 100 elk (Cervus canadensis) cross by us while we were enjoying some walking trails in the Rocky Mountains. While we were determined to respect their space, they seemed determined to take over the picnic table we were near. As they approached us we backed away until we ended up having to leave the trail because they did not seem to mind walking right toward us. Elk are the largest species in the deer family. They are also called wapiti, an indigenous word coming from the Shawnee and Cree which means “white rump”.

7.23.26 A lifer for me, this lovely (Pipilo chlorurus), was hopping along the ridge below a view point looking over the stunning landscapes of Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a juvenile, as mature adults have a rufous crown and this one has a plain brown matching its body.

6.23.26 My first decent photos of a broad-tailed hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus). I cannot get over the vibrancy of this males throat patch! Such a handsome bird and I was so fortunate he decided to perch in front of me while taking a break from displaying and protecting his territory.
