9.30.26 Many of our beautiful native pollinators are out right now finishing up whatever gathering they can get in before it turns too cold, like this sweat bee (genus Augochora I believe). In love with the amount of detail on the first shot. I’m trying out something new by cropping the photos to match the standard grid of this app.

9.19.26 I came across this little guy while working in my garden today and I had to take photos of it! This is a wide-footed treehopper (Enchenopa latipes). It is apparently the only treehopper species in the eastern US that has the unique shape that makes them look a thorn on the stem of a plant. Unfortunately for it, I know that this plant species doesn’t have thorns, but most predators would pass right by it thanks to its excellent camouflage. I first came across this species when I lived up in Acadia, and I’ve been hoping to see one again since I got my macro lens.

8.26.26 I love getting to see the hummingbirds appreciate the gardens at my house. This is a beautiful ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) enjoying some bean flowers and stocking up in preparation for a long journey later this fall.

7.29.26 A stunning snowy egret (Egretta thula) hunting beyond the grasses! always love seeing every, they are quite beautiful and neat to watch them while they hunt. These are the last of my critter photos from my Colorado trip, though I probably will be sharing some landscape photos soon!

7.29.26 This is a female yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus). While I have seen this species a few times now, I hadn’t managed to capture any good photos of them before so this was exciting! I wish I had seen some of the males up close to photograph as well because the yellow on their heads is much more vibrant.

7.29.26 Yet another lifer for me, this unique bird is a white-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi). You can’t really tell in this photo, but this species, similar to the glossy ibis, has iridescent feathers on the wings, which makes them particularly stunning in the right light.

7.29.26 Another lifer for me on this trip here- these are eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis). Quite fascinating little water birds! They can be found in parts of North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

7.29.26 I certainly had not expected to see any pelicans in Colorado so I was quite surprised when we ended up seeing about 30 of them at a wildlife area in Saguache, CO. These are American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) which I first saw on my trip to the coasts of Oregon and Washington last year.

7.23.26 It was incredible to see a herd of about 100 elk (Cervus canadensis) cross by us while we were enjoying some walking trails in the Rocky Mountains. While we were determined to respect their space, they seemed determined to take over the picnic table we were near. As they approached us we backed away until we ended up having to leave the trail because they did not seem to mind walking right toward us. Elk are the largest species in the deer family. They are also called wapiti, an indigenous word coming from the Shawnee and Cree which means “white rump”.

7.23.26 A chipmunk enjoying a piece of bread that it must have found left by visitors of Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a chipmunk in the genus Neotamias, though I am not certain which species since there are a few that look similar.
